About this ebook
Welcome to a collection of experiences and feelings that I’ve gone through so far in life, written in the form of poetry. If you can relate to anything I’ve written and that made you feel less alone, then everything was worth it. We’re in this together because life is like that sometimes and it’s better when we’re not alone.

Life be Like that Sometimes - Amanda Patricia
What Am I?
If black skin is African
And white skin is Caucasian
And brown skin is Indian
Then what happens when I’m the damn rainbow?
What do I become if I can’t check just one box?
Why does it feel like I have to choose?
Hawaiian, Dominican
So much more
I have the mouth of my great-grandmother
Who raised my father
Who was never afraid to speak her mind
I have the healing touch of my papa
Who was a healer on the island of Hawaii
Who I never had the chance to meet
I have the determination of my grandmother
Who was the first woman to be the chief of her department in La República Dominicana
I speak the language of my ancestors
La lengua de amor
They live on inside me
Ellos viven dentro de mi
These parts that make me more than just the shade of melanin
My flesh shows
What am I?
I am a daughter
Whose parents taught me to always share my story
To always be kind
I am a friend
I am a voice for other girls
Who felt like an outsider looking in
What do I identify as?
I identify as a Hawaiian, Dominican, Scottish, Irish, Spanish, American
Who has a lot more than melanin and ethnicities to contribute
What am I?
I. Am. More.
Tease
Sometimes when you sneak up beside me
When your face is inches from mine
I wish you would commit to
Pressing your lips against mine
That you would commit to me
I wish you would see that
When I look at you, I want you to claim me
But you never do
And you always leave me wanting more
Thinking of You
I always think of you
Early in the morning
Wondering
If I’ll catch a glimpse of you sometime that day
I think of you late at night
While I am lying in bed
Wondering if you ever think of me
Then I dream of a future that never happens
But it keeps me hopeful to what could come
Don’t Get It Twisted
You think that I need you?
Honey, I may want you
In all of the ways my mind can conjure up
The pressure of your lips on mine
I want held hands
I want our bodies pressed together, holding our broken pieces
I want a lifetime of fights and makeups
I want you
But do not get it twisted
I do not need you
There are a million possible people that I could find
Who could give me the same things you could
I want it to be you
But I am prepared for it not to
