    Author’s Profile

    Foreword

I have always dreamt of coaching and becoming a discipline like any other discipline.

It is heart-warming to see Ramamurthy Krishna’s work in Prismatic Coaching. I am particularly impressed with the model of Qrefractive Index introduced in this book. I am very positive that the coaching community would start shaping this idea to make it even scientific.

The best part of the book I like is the ease with which it is written followed by the reflection exercise following the story. This I believe gives completeness to learning and help in skill development of coaches.

It is also important to see this book as part of a programme, not the whole programme. Krishna introduces further features in his start-up Potential Genesis (see his website www.potentialgenesis.com) which uses the concept of flipped teaching technique.

I am particularly gratified with the application of the metaphorming principle in building this concept. This sets the example for the coaching community to be encouraged to apply established researched principles to coaching.

Krishna’s work here is groundbreaking—enabling learning to be directed by the individual, rather than dictated solely by the outside system. After all, this is what coaching aims to be about, and approaches to formal learning have still much progress to make in this critical area.

I acknowledge the effort of Michael Stratford to motivate Ramamurthy Krishna to take this bold step.

I am positive that the coaching community will benefit from this work!

I am also sure this work would be inspiring to the coaching community globally to attempt application of science to coaching.

This attempt from Krishna makes it more certain for me that my dream of coaching would become a discipline is now a more realistic dream and not just a wild fantasy.

    Happy reading!

    Preface

T he germination of the idea for the book Prismatic Coaching was sowed by Michael Stratford. He was one of the first coaches ever to be awarded the master certified coach (MCC) credential by the International Coach Federation. He has written four books on coaching, including Masterful Questions , Directed Evolution: Taking Charge of Change , Hungers: The Hidden Motivators , and The Game of Coaching . He is currently writing Quintessential Leadership: 5 Timeless Practices for Leaders . Michael Stratford and I got into acquaintance after Michael commented on one of my blogs. The initial thought was Michael would be a co-author for this book with me, but given his busy schedule, we could never achieve this. The idea of the book started growing with few mentoring sessions by Michael and also sharing of one of the books. Michael was the one who actually initiated the metaphor of prism and glass in my thinking for writing this book.

A work like this needs motivation, and mine was fed by Dr Jeremy Ridge, chairman of the APECS board of directors. He fertilized and nurtured the idea. Jeremy specializes in senior management coaching, both with individuals and leadership teams, and in designing and facilitating senior management and organization-wide change programs. Dr Jeremy Ridge and I have been having a monthly chat, and the key topic is how to make coaching a discipline. It is at this point the book came into life. I
