Tony Payne

Tony Payne grew up in Newfoundland in the beautiful Bonne Bay area, Gros Morne National Park. Trained as a mason, cabinet maker/carpenter. He worked away in Ontario, BC, and PEI, but Newfoundland always called him back. Was with the same lady for twenty years, and have five beautiful kids between them. The eldest, Alex King, is a talented artist; the rest are still young, and he hopes they find their true calling in life also. His take on life is “life is too long to be angry.”

Learning to Fly in Woody Point - Tony Payne

Learning to fly in Woody Point

Ever since I was a little kid

And saw the birds, way up high

    I’ve always dreamed of parachuting

    And learning how to fly

Me and Rod found a robin’s nest

Tried to teach those babies, how to go to wing

Tossed them high up into the air

Poor things, we never got to hear them sing

I came across some friends of mine

    Drinking beer and smoking dope

You see that had so much appeal

I just had learn the rope

I fell in love a couple times

    Who could ask for more?

I was going to take them on a boat ride

They left me on the shore

I used to go to the bars around

I figured that would change my luck

But your skills at nothing, don’t change at all

When you’re too drunk to drive a truck

You see with age comes wisdom

    And all of lives affairs

You have to learn to love yourself

And find out who really cares

I never thought that I could soar

Like an eagle, way up in the sky

But growing up in Woody Point

You will eventually learn to fly.

    Way Better Than the City

I was walking in New York, I didn’t have a care

I walked a pass a beggar, and a girl with orange hair

One asked me for a dollar, so he could buy some tea

The other was a punk, trying to live for free

I went to California, where the girls are just fine

I strolled out to the beach, they were smoking pot and drinking wine

The girls were in bikinis, they all looked so tanned

Some guy asked if I want a draw, I just said no thanks man

I grew up in Newfoundland, where we don’t see none of that

    If you see a
