About this ebook

As part of the process of spiritual growth, we must work on the purification and refinement of our different vibrational bodies.
In order to purify and evolve our emotional body, we must remain vigilant to expose our habitual emotional patterns and thus become able to change the old recordings that are impressed on our etheric body. Also, we must learn new ways of dealing with negative emotions, how to stimulate positive emotions, and how to remain in balance by making this body sensitive to the guidance of our soul.
Our work to purify and develop our mental body involves developing intelligence, cultivating moral capacity, encouraging new attitudes, developing correct discernment, reprogramming the subconscious mind, periodically silencing the mind, practicing abstract thinking, and learning to dispel illusions.
The human spiritual bodies (atma, buddhi, and manas with the soul extension) emanate from the human monad or divine spark. A persons aura is formed by the aggregate of all human subtle bodies and their radiations.
The interaction among the three lower bodies, the chakra system, and the soul extension determines what we call good health or ill health. To maintain good health, we must learn to purify our lower bodies, balance the sacred elements, allow the free flow of vital energy through the chakra system, and live in total harmony with the universal laws of nature and spirit.

    CHAPTER I

The Human Emotional or Astral Body

Human beings are multi-dimensional in nature and possess seven interpenetrating bodies or principles. The human physical body is the seventh principle and the emotional or astral body is the sixth principle. The former two bodies, together with the lower mental body which is the fifth principle, form what is known as the personality triad or lower self.

In the same manner as physical matter, astral matter comprises seven different states that manifest in degrees going from denser to subtler. Physical atoms are infiltrated and surrounded by astral matter. The emotional body fills up approximately the same space as the physical body, extending somewhat beyond it, and being its structure considerably more fluid than the physical. Its substance resembles a cloud that moves ceaselessly in all directions.

The aura of this body (projected energy field) is in the shape of an oval that extends farther and around the physical body, from one to two inches to several feet. The main and more or less stable features of the person’s character are noticeable in this aura as basic, steady colors; while fleeting emotions are reflected as momentary, changing colors in accord with the different feelings involved. Thus emotional changes are radiated out into the aura that mirrors these changes by exhibiting varying colors in constant motion.

Emotions possessing a lower vibratory character, such as anger, fear, depression, or worry, produce dark colored clouds within the emotional aura. On the contrary, emotions of a higher nature, such as devotion, joy, compassion, and love, are the cause of clear, brilliant colors glowing through the aura. The more developed a person is, regarding tendencies and feelings; the more expanded his/her consciousness, the more transparent and luminous the astral or emotional body of such a person will be.

    Functions of the Astral Body

The astral body is one of the vehicles of the soul that allows the individual to communicate emotions as well as respond to them. Inherent to this body is the force (desire) that impulses our daily activities. Hence, the astral body is also known as emotional body or desire body. Desire is what makes us either attracted or repelled by things, depending on their giving us enjoyment or suffering respectively.

This body is the carrier of feelings and character traits. In their basic form, feelings manifest as sensations that encompass different levels: physical states, mental states, and emotional states. While in their most complex form, feelings appear as emotions. The emotional body is moved to activity by desire, emotions and passion.

    DIAGRAM #2

The astral body, through the etheric body, relates the external world to the individual’s mind. Thus it connects the impressions captured by the physical senses with the mental body that perceives them. It works as follows: The physical sense organs receive impacts from the external world 5812.png these vibrations are transmitted to the dense and etheric bodies 5819.png then they pass to the emotional or astral body 5817.png they are transformed into feelings 5821.png these awaken corresponding vibrations in the mental body where perception takes place 5826.png these are presented to the inner soul extension as objects of consciousness 5828.png the mind (mental body) produces corresponding thoughts 5831.png these vibrations travel, along the same bridge, to the physical brain, inducing there physical vibrations that correspond to the mental ones. So the massive impacts of material objects can be conveyed to the soul’s consciousness by successive gradations of energy. The continuous movement of vibrations in both directions is what eventually results in the gradual evolution of the emotional body which grows in size, definition of its outline, and inner organization; becoming more refined in its texture.

The astral body, which is built up with substance from the astral plane, keeps the individual constantly linked to this plane of existence, although, during the initial steps of spiritual development, this fact is unknown to the person. The subtle substance of the emotional body is intimately connected to the even subtler substance of the mental body, and both are ceaselessly working together as they influence each other by acting and reacting.

During waking hours, experiences such as the sensing of invisible presences, presentiments, etc., are the result of the activity of the astral body. During sleep, the astral body projects itself out of the physical body and functions thus directly in the astral plane. Here, direct communication with deceased people is possible. After physical death we temporarily exist in the astral plane still using our emotional body as a vehicle. That is why, the more we work to purify it and learn to use it consciously and wisely, the better conditions we will find after death.

The astral body functions as a storage house for retained emotions such as fear, anger, worry and grieve; to name a few. This happens whether we are conscious or unconscious of it and the vibrations produced by these emotions are automatically transmitted to the outer world via the emotional aura of the individual. Here may be the explanation for situations in which instantaneous attraction or rejection happen between people, or even toward places or circumstances we may find ourselves involved with.

The messages we are constantly sending out in this manner invite vibrations of the same quality from the surrounding environment. Therefore we may be often faced with situations and persons that reflect precisely what we fear and are trying to avoid. So if we know how to look, the external world can be used as a mirror, reflecting back to us the contents of our own subconscious mind.

As long as we continue retaining this type of emotions in our astral bodies, they will escort us again and again into circumstances that reproduce the original emotional vibrations and thus perpetuate their existence. Unattended emotional blocks will persist and continue to exist throughout following incarnations. Also, they will play an important part in determining the conditions of our state after death and during the period of a new life. Thus, to a significant extent, the course of our existence rests in our own hands. We must work on ourselves to change our circumstances and grow.

Development of the Emotional or Astral Body

During the early stages of spiritual evolution, the astral body of a human being is still undeveloped. The emotions experienced through such a body are usually extreme and of primitive nature (strong passions, lust, fear, anger, greed); all of them based on survival instinct. Throughout successive incarnations and progressive learning, the astral body becomes more and more refined, and the individual is thus able to open up to the innate capability for love and appreciation of beauty, which will expand from encompassing smaller circles (self – family – community) to larger ones (country – the world – all of creation and life). The development and improvement of the astral body depends also on the following:

    • The purification of the physical/etheric bodies.

    • The purification and evolution of the mental body.

The beginning of progress and growth of the emotional body shows up when changes occur at the level of passions. For instance, the manifestation of unselfish impulses, even if minimal, toward members of family or friends, will denote some upward movement. This feeling of unselfishness promotes vibrations in the finer substance of the astral body and consequently attracts to it subtler substance from the astral plane to build it. Thus the emotional body is continuously substituting its materials through the interaction of passions, desires and emotions. So the emotional body is in ceaseless movement and it is persistently being built up with substance from the astral plane which is in accord with the degree of spiritual development of the person. The more we remain dominated by lower passions and desires, the more undeveloped and coarse our emotional vehicle will be. The less we react to external attractions or repulsions, and learn to be moved by our inner will and self-determination, the more refined and advanced our emotional body will be.

The Astral Body of Average Individuals

An average individual may be said to possess moral and intellectual values that are more developed than those of people at a more primitive level of spiritual growth. In these cases, the astral body is composed of a finer substance; it is bigger in size and brighter in appearance. Its colors are clearer and more luminous. Its outline is more defined and the chakras (energy centers) are clearly visible. Such astral bodies are more awake and responsive to stimuli coming not only through the physical body but also from the soul aspect of the individual and from the mind’s faculties of memory and imagination that can prompt it to activity, inducing now the physical body to act instead of only being acted upon by it.

At these levels of growth, there is more interaction among the different human bodies or principles, thus vibrations move in both directions:

The astral bodies of these individuals are becoming more stable and prepared to function independently, separated from the physical body in its own plane (the astral plane).

The Astral Body of Advanced Individuals

This astral body is larger, definitely outlined, finer in texture and more organized interiorly.
