    DEDICATION

I would like to dedicate this book to the people out there who have suffered grief in their lives, how they have coped with it, and how they learned to live with new hope in Christ Jesus.

I would also like this book dedicated to my family. Having no family of my ‘own’, I refer to my husband Ed, and our two dogs Sadie and Sugar. I consider my family, my father, (who is now in heaven with the Lord) my mother, and my three sisters. Don, Ruth, Barbara, Margaret and Becky. Also to my darling niece and nephews, who are my blood and whom I love dearly. Dan, Conrad, Keith, Darby, Hunter and Kane. My aunts, uncles, and Chi-town cousins. Lastly, but not least, the numerous nieces and nephews that reside on my husbands side of the family as well as my many in-laws who also carry a huge place in my heart. May the Lord bless you and keep you all. There is nothing greater in life than the love of another living soul, or the love of Jesus. He who sacrificed His life so that we could have one.

    Part One

About thirty minutes ago I slowly sauntered from my house which is on the opposite side of the block to my destination, Hazels house. It was snowing lightly but not very cold, that explained the light jacket and my regular old tennis shoes. My usual attire consisted of a sweater and jeans in which I was wearing under the outerwear.

Noticing for the first time at my young age, I saw the little snowflakes melting as soon as they hit the sidewalk. As I walked along it was like I was learning something new. Seeing this simple thing of melting snowflakes on cement for the very first time. Who would of thought just from a simple snowflake that it would amaze me in this way, the simplicity in life suddenly hit me like a grandiose feeling of love.

Here I am visiting with Hazel again, oh how I love to be here, hang out here, just be me here!

From the open curtain in Hazel’s small, warm and inviting kitchen I could see that it was gray, cloudy, dreary and still barely snowing. The mountains were hardly visible, however. I could tell that it was snowing hard up there just by the dark clouds that hovered over the rocky peaks. It certainly was gloomy outside, I didn’t care much for days like this because of just that. However today I was glad that I wasn’t out there in it. I was feeling calm sitting at Hazel’s kitchen table gazing outside, looking intently out of the clean, spotless window.

Tranquility, serenity, and peace were some of the feelings I have while being right here. Since I met Hazel and started coming over to be with her, it has been the highlight of my young life.

My memories drifted back to when Hazel and I first met each other, I guess one could say I was daydreaming about it. This is my recollection of that wonderful day in which I met Hazel.

While riding my bike one day in the fall, I was feeling as lonely as ever.

The school year had started about a month earlier. I’d been feeling down because I felt unwanted and unneeded. My friends from the previous school year didn’t want a thing to do with me. They made fun of me about all kinds of things which hurt me to the core of my being. In addition, at home my sisters decided that they didn’t want me around either. Not being a tattle tale I didn’t say anything to my parents or to any of the teachers. Keeping it all in I was thinking that it would all just go away.

On the particular day in which I met Hazel I went to go spend some time with the neighbor kids, they were always nice to me and wanted to play with me, plus they had never be mean to me. I knew I’d be safe here, thinking to myself. I pedaled over to their house happily, noticing that they were outside throwing a football back and forth when I arrived.

Shock came over me when even the neighbor kids started teasing me, even being very hurtful. They had never acted like that before, why are they doing it now? Astonished by their behavior, I decided to leave.

Riding slowly away from them on my bike I was feeling very alone and rejected as my heart sank. The sensation of a pebble hitting my back triggered tears to run from my eyes that I just couldn’t stop no matter how hard I tried.

While I was sulking, I slowly pedaled, not really knowing where I was going. The weeping was easing up but I felt like I didn’t have a friend in the world, or sisters for that matter!

Hazel happened to be outside raking leaves then loading the leaves into big black garbage bags. Her swift movements amazed me for such a small person. She also seemed to be dressed up for cleaning the yard, except she had an apron on.

From the sidewalk I was sitting on my bike while I watched her for some time. I could hear her humming what sounded like a hymn. Then without notice I had this uncontrollable urge to get off of my bike and go toward her.

Always looking for a job to do, I hopped off of my bike and strolled over uneasily as I meekly asked her if she needed any help. There were neat little piles of leaves everywhere.

The moment I looked at her I could tell that she was kind, loving, sweet and gentle, not to mention very, very pretty. Connecting with her in that moment like I’ve never felt with any one that I had just met. I swear to this day that her eyes twinkled when we first looked at each other. It was as if we’d known each other forever! She was short, her skin was so flawless with a most gorgeous ivory color. Yet
