God on Trial
November 2004
I feared the phone. Something was driving me to dial 1-900#’s. This was the same urge that had wanted me to steal when I was a child. I don’t know if if it was my OCD or the devil, or a combination of the two. However, it was tearing my parents and my life to shreds. I didn’t want to leave the house because what if I used a payphone with a credit card and was billed hundreds of thousands of dollars. Growing up wealthy, I always slightly measured a man by his bank account. If I ran up huge bills, the telephone companies would take away the money I had, my parents’ dollars, and possibly our house.
Steve, you don’t have a credit card,
my dad said to me reassuringly.
I once did, maybe I still do.
You don’t. Do you see a credit card anywhere?
No, but maybe I’ll steal yours in the night and use it to make calls outside.
I won’t let you,
my poor aging father said.
I can call from home and ring up charges.
We have a block on the 900 numbers.
It might go through anyway. We are all going to lose our money,
I screamed.
Steve, calm down.
Don’t ever tell a person to calm down.
My dad who was sitting in his chair, got up, and walked towards me. For the first time in a decade he put his arms around me and hugged me tightly.
We love you Steve.
Then help me.
I’m trying the best I can.
I went to sleep that night at 10p.m. and awoke about 4 hours later. I started yelling for my parents who were sleeping in their bedroom. Something in my head told
