The Truth About You - Dr. Joseph Murphy

    Chapter 1

    THE INVISIBLE PART OF YOU

The truth about you is that God indwells you and walks and talks in you. Inwardly and outwardly, you are a spiritual being, and when you awaken to the God-Power within you, you will discover that the joy of the Lord is your strength.

You live in God, and God lives in you. God is the invisible part of you—your mind and Spirit. Invisible Powers always uphold you, and your wants are supplied from the fountain of Life, for God is your instant everlasting support. Your body is a vase into which God pours the precious perfume of his inmost essence. You are a holy vessel of life and a vehicle for the expression of all that is true of God.

Affirm boldly and with deep conviction the following simple prayer:

I am an organ of God, and God hath need of me where I am; otherwise, I would not be here. God reveals to me the next step in my spiritual unfoldment, and I follow the lead, which comes.

    The God Presence

And he began to say unto them, this day is this scripture fulfilled in your ears. (Luke 4:21). In those days they were waiting for the Messiah to come, but the Messiah is within you—the God Presence. It was never born and it will never die. It is instantly available to you. Peace is now, harmony is now, love is now, joy is now, beauty is now, power is now, illumination is now, inspiration is now, and the healing power is now. All these factors are of God, and you might as well take and claim all these now rather than fifty years from now. Your Savior is within you—the Presence of God—the only Presence, Power, Cause and Substance.

You have heard this oft repeated quotation, Man is made in the image and likeness of God. This means your mind is God’s mind, as there is only One Mind. Your spirit is God’s Spirit, and you create in exactly the same way, and through the same law as God creates.

    The Creative Power

God is not a person, so we don’t say, Our Father, who art in Heaven. We say, "Our Father which art in Heaven," indicating an impersonal Presence and Power—an Infinite Life and Infinite Intelligence.

This Universal Presence creates out of itself by means of it becoming that particular thing. In other words, God becomes man by believing He to be man. God creates a being out of Himself capable of returning glory, light and love to Himself. Abraham knew the Creative Power. He was aware of it, and he demonstrated it in his life. He believed that the Spirit would guide and direct him, which, of course, it did.

    The Living Spirit

The idols of the heathen are silver and gold, the work of men’s hands. (Ps. 135:15).

The heathen are not people but negative superstitions and thoughts in our mind. You must not have any graven images of God, such as idols or statues to be worshiped, whether made of silver, gold, bronze or any other previous metal. Mental pictures make graven images. The idea that God is a great king in a place called heaven makes just such a mental image in one’s own mind, and millions throughout the world grow to believe it and worship such an imaginary being instead of the true God, which is the Living Spirit Almighty in each person.

Let us begin to strip ourselves of all disguises and tune in with the Infinite, while claiming that what is true of God is true of us. The God that millions all over the world beg and beseech is the Deep Self of you, the Divine Presence within you. Many religious dogmatists frighten people into thinking that God is some tyrannical being living somewhere in the heavens—a God of vengeance, a mysterious stranger. Graven images of God

    Infinity is within you

I have said ye are Gods, and all of you are sons of the Most High. It is fundamental and foundational to say that the offspring must be of the same nature and species of the parent. My Father and I are one. This means you and God are one mentally, spiritually, and physically. Infinity is within you, and therefore there is no end to the glory, which is man. The journey is ever onward, upward, and Goddard. You are capable of infinite growth and spiritual development.

The only sure thing in the universe

The capacity of Spirit is to think enabling you to choose, compare, weigh and decide. You have volition, choice and initiative. The only immaterial power you are aware of is your thought. Descartes rationalized that all objective evidence is not absolutely true, e.g., optical illusions, others deceiving you, etc. The only sure thing in the universe is that God is God.

From an absolute point of view, God cannot be known, for nothing can be known in the absolute sense of the term. But there is much we can learn, such as those thoughts are things; what we feel we attract and what we imagine we become. Our thoughts are creative, and whatever we impress on our subconscious is expressed. We can keep on tapping the infinite reservoirs of wisdom and power within us, since there is no end to the powers and intelligence of the Infinite within us. Job says: He . . . hanged the earth upon nothing (Job 26:7).

    Father and Son

Jesus states categorically, definitely, and unequivocally that God is our Father, and that we are His children. Your relationship with God should therefore be on the most friendly and loving terms, that of a father and son. Never again during the whole course of your life look upon God as a God of wrath, indiscriminate in his vengeance. Such a concept held in the mind brings untold misery and suffering to the individual who entertains such belief. Our beliefs are our masters, and all beliefs tend to manifest themselves in our lives.

    Think about God’s love

We are all children of the one God. That’s the unity of all life. All men and women are brothers—same mind, same spirit, and same substance. Therefore, to hurt another is to hurt you; and to bless another is to bless yourself.

Abraham left Ur of Chaldea. Ur means sorcery, black magic, and worship of stars, idols and all that sort of thing. Abram changed his name to Abraham, meaning the father of the multitude, indicating the one God, the one Presence and Power.

Think about God’s love. Analyze it, claim it, and begin to realize that all the love of men and women thought the world is but a faint reflection of the Infinite Ocean of love. God’s love is written in our heart and inscribed in your inward parts.

Believe only that which is true of God; accept that which is lovely and have good report. Believe in the goodness of God, in the love of God, in the guidance of God, in the harmony of God, in the wisdom of the Almighty. Believe and expect all the blessings of Heaven here and now. According to your belief is it done to you? Recognize the Fatherhood of God—God is your Loving Father; He loves you, and He cares for you. God wants you to be happy, joyous, and free. You are here to express the joy of living and to reproduce all the qualities, attributes, aspects and potencies of God.

    The Great Law of Unity

After this manner therefore pray ye: Our Father which art in heaven . . .

    (Matthew 6:9).

Our Father means that all of us have a common progenitor—the Life Principle—and we are all intimately related. Actually, we are all brothers and sisters. The word humanity means the One Being appearing as many. This indicates your essential unity with God, with all men and with all things in the world. There is but One Mind and One Spirit animating all of us.

When you pray, it is essential that you have a sense of unity with all men and women and with all things in the world. All things—all the bests of the field and the fowl of the air—came forth from the One Source, and one part of Spirit cannot be antagonistic to another part of Spirit, as Spirit is one and indivisible. When you say Our Father, you realize the great law of unity or oneness. This reduces all sense of conflict and releases the imprisoned splendor within you.

    This Lordly Power

God is Infinite, and Infinity cannot be divided or multiplied. The Bible says, I form the light, and create darkness: I make peace, and create evil: I the Lord do all these things. (Isaiah 45:7) See now that I, even I, am he, and there is no god with me: I kill, and I make alive; I wound, and I heal . . . (Deut. 32:39)

These Bible quotations dramatize and portray lucidly that there is but one Power which you can use to give you light, which means that when called upon consciously by you, Infinite Intelligence will cast light on any problem. You create darkness when you say, I’m stymied; I’m blocked. There is no way out. It’s hopeless. By your conscious decree, when you have adopted this mental attitude, you are saying: Infinite Intelligence does not know the way out, and according to your belief is it done unto you. You live in the darkness and confusion created by your ignorance or misuse of this Lordly Power. Pray this way,

God is, and all there is, is God. This Presence and Power are within me, flowing through me as harmony, health, peace, joy, right action, abundance, true expression, and inspiration. I am a clear channel for the Divine, and I know that as I think and feel these truths I will experience all the blessings of life. I make a habit of this prayer, and wonders happen in my life. This establishes a new cycle of consciousness, which is my New Year.

    The Truth of Being

The Truth of Being is that the whole wide world and all things contained therein are the self-expression of God. Man, not understanding this greatest of truths, forms false beliefs about the Truth. He sees limitations of all kinds around him; he feels himself to be separate from God and dependent on his own efforts. Let us realize that God is doing all things through us. If another person seems to behave badly—to the capacity of your thinking and feeling that God is working through him, will his conduct change?

However, why should we dwell upon and magnify the seeming faults of others? Everyone has Godlike qualities if we would only look for them. Seek and ye shall find. If you look for what is good, you will find it. For your own peace and happiness (if for no higher purpose) and effort should be made to seek out the good qualities in others. It is told that when Thales was asked what was the most difficult thing to do and what was the easiest, he answered: "The hardest thing to do is to learn to know oneself; the easiest, to find fault with the doings of other people."

If all your thoughts were loving, peaceful and harmonious all day long, your body would become so rarefied and attenuated that the molecular vibrations of your body would be invisible, yet you would be here. Your loved ones are all around you, separated by frequency only.

The way she thought, felt and imaged

A young girl who had a beautiful voice wanted to be recognized and expressed her talents. She pictured herself singing beautifully before an audience, and she heard her teacher congratulating her. She practiced this over and over again until the private movie of her mind had all the tones of reality. At the time of this writing, she has appeared again and again before social groups as the major attraction. She created according to the image and likeness of her thoughts. The cause was her own consciousness, which means the way she thought, felt and imaged.

Our fathers understood not thy wonders in Egypt; they remembered not the multitude of thy mercies; but provoked him at the sea, even at the Red Sea.

It is your own state of mind or consciousness, which brings you out of Egypt, or, in other words, suffering and misery. Consciousness means the way you think feel, believe, and whatsoever you give mental consent to. Whenever you come out of any difficulty or recover from any sickness or other distressing situation, it is your mind, or consciousness, which brings you out. The Red Sea represents any disturbing emotional problem or severe illness. You can walk over your fears, doubts and false beliefs and keep them underfoot.

    Suppositional opposite

The minute you place suppositional opposite in your mind to the One Power, you have not yet advanced to this level of consciousness called confirmation. To say, I can’t make ends meet, There is no way out, It is hopeless, He is incurable, I will lose everything, A jinx is following me, or anything similar to them, you are mentally and emotionally uniting with negativity. You are not being loyal, true, devoted to the One Power, your own I AMness. If you really believed, you would not mentally unite with these false concepts; this is called idolatry or in the Bible adultery. Idolatry and adultery are synonymous in biblical terminology. To worship is to give attention to, to exalt, to deem worthy of study and devotion.

    A sea of swirling emotions

Recently, I talked with a woman who believed that there was a malevolent agency at work against her. Her life was chaotic. She was frightfully confused. She said that her arthritic condition had come on her suddenly, compelling her to get a cane. The pain was excruciating. Apparently, the pain pills did not alleviate the distress very much, and she was going through a sea of swirling emotions.

I explained to her that there is no malevolent agency anywhere. God is all there is, and God is infinitely good and perfect. Your mind receives impressions, and the more Truth you absorb, the more wholesome it becomes. The Creative Power is in you. That means that God is in you, and externals are not causative. This gives you leverage over the impressions that come through your five senses.

    Praise and exalt God

Revere the Divine Presence within you and begin to praise and exalt God, even as all the Psalms encourage and emphasize that you should. It is the divine Presence that heals and takes you through the turbulent waters of your mind to wholeness and inner peace. This woman prayed as follows:

I know that my mind is a mirror, which is always reflecting whatever it turns to. I turn the mirror of my mind to God all day long. I claim frequently that God is with me and that His love fills my soul. His peace saturates my whole being. I exalt God in the midst of me, and I give thanks for the miraculous healing taking place now.

I am happy to say that at the end of three weeks, she had a remarkable healing and no longer needed pain pills. He rebuked the Red Sea also, and it was dried up: so He led them through the depths, as through the wilderness.

The above woman went through the Red Sea of negative, destructive emotions, and the edema subsided, the pain disappeared and the suppleness of her joints was restored. She was Divinely led through the depths of despair and through the wilderness of her own mind. All the weeds and tangled growth of fear, ignorance and superstition were consumed and burned up by the fires of divine love.

    Real Self

Recently I counseled a woman who had just been married. She had committed murder in another state and had served time; she was full of self-condemnation and guilt. She was also full of fear of being exposed, as she moved in very high professional circles.

I explained to her that the very first thing she must do was to cease condemning herself. Whenever the guilt or fear-thought came to her mind, she should supplant it immediately with,

I am a daughter of God. God loves me and cares for me.

I added that as she keeps this up, the day would come when she will be completely at peace. I advised her not to fight the thought of self-condemnation but to supplant it with the God-like thought and that after awhile the subconscious is reconditioned. Even if she went back to the town where the crime occurred, the accusers and the wagging tongues of the gossips would cease to be. The reason is that when you stop accusing yourself, others stop accusing and vilifying you.

She began to see that the Real Self of her was God, and that it was the false self, or the mal=conditioned self, that had committed the crime. She was, of course, responsible for her act and had served time in prison as punishment for it for many years. The point is that she no longer has to browbeat herself and torture herself mentally.

    Know yourself

You can eat of the bread of peace, of joy, of faith and of confidence in the only Power there is. Your confidence and faith should not be in creeds, dogma and traditions. Believe that whatever you impress on your subconscious will be expressed as form, function, experience and event. Then you are learning to know yourself a little better.

When we are imbued with lofty ideals and when we think Godlike thoughts, unpleasant ideals, little things disappear and all the petty things of life become inconsequential and are forgotten. Our soul actually becomes filled with the glory of the whole, and the limitations and restrictions of our daily life vanish. We find that this happy mood lifts us up and brings us en rapport with the Universal mind of God.

    The Living Spirit Almighty

The Bible says, . . . I AM THAT I AM . . . (Exodus 3:14), which means unconditioned Being—the Living Spirit Almighty. It is a nameless name. It means the Only Presence and Power—God. It is an attempt by Moses to express the Infinite Nature of God, which is without face, form or figure. It is timeless, ageless and formless.

I AM means you are announcing the Presence of God in you. You are an individualization of the Infinite. If you say, I am John Jones, you are announcing that you are a man possessing a certain name, nationality, characteristics, position in life, etc. In other words, you are the Universal Life appearing in the form of man. Whatever you attached to I AM you become.

I AM means undifferentiated consciousness, awareness, pure being, the life-principal. I AM is called the Virgin Mary because God conceives without the aid of any man. You can claim that God is guiding you now and believe it, and you will receive an answer without the aid of any man. Whatever you attach to I AM, you become.

You can boldly affirm, I am whole, perfect, loving, prosperous, and inspired, and as you continue to affirm these truths and feel and believe what you claim, without the help or cooperation of anyone, you will express what you felt as true.

    The truth is…

When you say, I AM, you are announcing the Presence of God within you. When you pray and there follows a sense of peace, quietness and confidence, that means that you have mentally touched your Higher Self (God in you; the I AM) and that you have begun to know yourself a little better. The Christ in you is The I AM, the Living Spirit Almighty, the Life Principle. Descartes said, Cogito ergo sum, which means: I think; therefore, I AM.

    Chapter 2

    YOU BECOME WHAT

    YOU CONDEMN

When you vilify, criticize, and find fault with others, you begin to exemplify what you criticize. You become what you condemn. When you are angry, hostile, and bitter, your mind is much more receptive to the negative, fearful, and hateful suggestions of the world. Hate betrays man and condemns him to be that which he condemns. Ofttimes the conqueror becomes like the conquered foe.

The reason is obvious. You are operating at a very a very low vibration and you are opening your mind to all sorts of angry, hateful vibrations from the race mind. You are operating at a very low wavelength and tuning in on all the negative currents of humanity at that level of vibration, because like attracts like.

A nation is an aggregation of individuals, and if you study the people in any nation, they act towards others in the way they act toward each other. For example, if a country has enslaved its people, and it then attacks another country, its purpose is to enslave the population of that country. When we look at a war in which one country wants to dominate the other, you will find that those who, within the state, had control and were dominant over the fortunes of the rest start the war.

It is no use blaming others

It is foolish to contemplate something that you heartily dislike, because by condemning it you will become it. Your concept or estimate of yourself is the cause of all conditions and circumstances of your life. All changes must come from within you. There will be no changes on the outside until you change within. It is no use blaming others, and it is useless to blame society for your problems and difficulties. Furthermore, it is a waste of time and effort to blame other nations.

Take heed that ye despise not God in human form. He may be at your side in the person of your beloved one, through the working of God’s grace.

    Maintain a sense of wholeness

For these things were done, that the scripture should be fulfilled, a bone of him shall not be broken.

The statement about a bone not being broken signifies that Life is One and Indivisible, and denotes man’s sense of oneness with the Living Spirit Almighty. Not a bone (idea) is broken means that we have no sense of separation, but we have a complete sense of fullness or at-one-ment with He Who Forever Is. We must have no distorted mental picture, but maintain always a sense of wholeness, completion, and perfection; then not a bone of our body or consciousness will be broken.

    The land of plenty

Do you gossip; dissect others; criticize them, and indulge in backbiting? These negative qualities would prevent you from controlling and disciplining this important faculty of mind. Do you hear and feel only the best for others? If you can, turn not aside; faint not; the Truth shall lead you to a land of plenty (Canaan) flowing with the milk of life eternal and the honey of unblemished wisdom.

Simon of Canaan may be summed up as receptivity to the inner voice of wisdom, truth, and beauty. This leads us to the land of Canaan—the Promised Land—the realization
