The stories of mental and physical illnesses recorded in the Bible have reoccurred from time immemorial to the present moment. You may see conditions and symptoms of diseases described in the Bible in almost any hospital in the country. It is true, of course, that the diseases described today have scientific names derived from medical terminology.

All over the world today, men and women of various creeds are awakening to the tremendous therapeutic results following the application of mental and spiritual laws. In medicine, psychiatry, psychology, and other related fields, articles have been written to the effect of destructive mental and emotional conflicts as the cause of all kinds of diseases. For example, in Emotions and Bodily Changes, a magnificent work on the mental and emotional disorders behind the various diseases, by Dr. Flanders Dunbar.

All this is prophetic of the termination of the power of the five senses, the reign of so-called matter, and the re-establishment of the reign of divine intelligence, the infinite healing presence behind all things. For it is written in the Bible, "I am the Lord that healeth thee. I am the Lord, thy God. I will come and heal thee. I will restore health into thee and heal thee of thy wounds," sayeth the Lord. "Who healeth all the diseases? Who satisfies thy mouth with good things? Who restoreth the youth like the eagle?"

The Bible is a psychological textbook which teaches how to overcome all problems. It explains how we get into trouble and teaches us how to get out of trouble. It teaches us science of life and knowledge of the meaning of symbols, the signs of the Hebrew alphabet, and the meaning of the various names of the forms that are the key to all the stories in the Bible.

You may find the meanings of the various names given in the Bible in Strong’s Concordance or Young’s Concordance. There are many other reference books, but the above two are generally used by all students interested in the inner meaning of the Bible.

To fully understand what another speaks or writes, it is necessary to tune in with the writer, claiming and knowing that his ideas, thoughts, words, and feelings are reproduced in our mind.

We do not know who wrote the Gospels. The Bible was written by names of the nameless, and as I write or speak on these wonderful stories, I say to my deep self, or higher self in meditation, What did I, as the writer of these stories mean when I wrote them? For the mind wrote them.

The mind who wrote them is the mind who reads them. That mind is one, one mind common to all individual men. That mind is within you. You can be quiet and still feel the living intelligence within you, flowing through your conscious mind, revealing everything you need to know.

There is only one mind. A memory of everything that has ever transpired is within your subjective mind. It is possible for you to tune in to that infinite ocean of wisdom within you.

In a state of intercommunion of mind with mind, it is possible to have transmitted to your mind all the thoughts, ideas, and feelings of another mind with which you are in tune or rapport.

This is possible without the ordinary channels of sensuous communication. There is but one mind common to all individual men, the same healing presence which Moses, Elijah, Paul, and Jesus used, available today. "For I am the Lord that healeth thee, no beginning or end." It was never born; it will never die. Water wets it not, fire burns it not, wind blows it not away.

What is it? It is a living spirit within you which created you. Use that presence and power, and go forward in the light. Move from glory to glory until the dawn appears and the shadows flee away.

The following quotation is taken from the fourth chapter of Luke. It forms a sound basis for all healing and tells all of us what we are here for. It says, "‘The Spirit of the Lord is upon me because he has anointed me to preach the Gospel to the poor. He has sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovery of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised.’ He closed the book, and he gave it again to the minister and sat down. The eyes of all of them that were in the synagogue were fastened on him, and he began to say unto them, ‘This day is a Scripture fulfilled in your ears.’"

That’s from the fourth chapter of Luke, 18th to the 21st verse, and is one of the most remarkable and extraordinary statements in the whole Bible. He said, "This day is this Scripture fulfilled in your ears." Not tomorrow or next week or next year, but now, this minute. For as Upanishad said, "God is the eternal now."

Your good is this moment. Claim your health now. Claim peace now. Why wait for it? The peace of God fled your mind this very moment; as you call upon it, it answers you. It’ll be with you in trouble. It will set you on high because you have known its name. The healing presence and the peace of God are within you this very moment.

Someone asked me in our class about the healing miracles, whether the healing stories in the Bible were true. The answer to the question was very simple. If the use of the healing principle is going on all the time and is applicable to all people, all the time and everywhere, then it is certainly truer, more interesting, and more fascinating than if it were an historic event of a certain date, a definite geographical location, and confined to just certain people.

The healing presence is omnipresent, present in the dog and the cat and the tree and the soil, everywhere. It’s within you. It’s omnipresent, present everywhere, and therefore that healing presence is within you. It created you from a cell.

It knows all the processes and functions of your body. It’s all wise. It’s the ever-living one, the all-wise one, the all-knowing one, the self-renewing one, the healing presence, and the healing power. In order to understand your Bible, see it as a great psychological, spiritual drama taking place in the consciences of all people everywhere throughout the world. And when they pray scientifically, they get results.

Look upon the following dramatic episodes recorded in the Bible as stories about yourself and your friends awakening from darkness to the light within. You can call Jesus a man, yes, but you can call Jesus in the Bible illumined reason as Robert Taylor of Cambridge, England did in 1829. Your concordance gives you many meanings for Jesus such as God as Savior, or God is your solution or salvation. In other words, the name Joshua in the Old Testament and Jesus in the New are identical. They mean exactly the same thing.

The meaning is that your awareness, or faith in the God wisdom, can do all things. So God is the solution, the Savior in you, because it’s the solution to all problems. It knows all and sees all. Look upon Jesus as yourself, possessed of faith and confidence, looking at the thoughts, beliefs, and opinions of your mind. This is called your synagogue in the Bible.

By rejecting all the false beliefs, theories, and ideas, and announcing the presence of your ideal or the state desired, you do this in the present tense. The Bible writer tells you that no matter what you are seeking, it exists now. Now is the day of salvation. Now is the accepted time.

Why wait for a healing? Why postpone it? Why say, Someday I will have peace? The God of peace is within you. You can claim, God’s river of peace flows through me now at this very moment, saturating my mind and my heart and my whole being.

The power of the Almighty is within you. Why wait for power? It’s already there. You will receive energy and strength as you call upon it and it answers you.

Love is here at this very moment, and you can experience divine love welling up in your heart for all people. You can say, God’s love saturates my mind and my heart, fills my whole being. The God of love will respond, Call upon me. I will answer you.

The nature of that infinite presence and power is to respond. You can attract your divine companion now, because what you are seeking in the future is present now, right where you are. Your knowledge of the laws of your mind is your savior.

"They were astonished at his doctrine, for his word was with power. In the synagogue was a man which had a spirit of an unclean devil and cried out with a loud voice saying, ‘Let us alone. What are we to do with thee, thou Jesus of Nazareth? Art thou come to destroy us? I know thee who thou art, the holy one of God.’

"Jesus rebuked him saying, ‘Hold thy peace, and come out of him.’ When the devil had thrown him in the midst, he came out of him and hurt him not." That’s in the fourth chapter of Luke, 32nd to 35th verses. You have related passages in Mark, and this is more or less the same.

There was a belief in ancient times that when a man was insane, he was possessed by demons or devils. This had its corollary in the belief that all psychotic or mentally deranged people were possessed by demons. In Bible days, exorcism in its various forms became the regularly accepted form of therapy for mentally disordered patients. Even today, in some parts of America, and even here in Los Angeles, a student will say, Oh, I think he or she is possessed by a demon.

At one time, people tried various methods in order to drive demons out of the mind or body of the person. Today the psychiatrist, psychologist, and spiritual leader tries to bring about an adjustment of the personality and a cleansing of the mind of all negative thoughts and false beliefs.
