    Acknowledgements

You can never accomplish any of your dreams alone, and thank goodness, I did not have to. First, I must thank my husband, Carlos Salmeron, for being my number one cheerleader and believing in my dreams of being an author. You are the best thing that has ever happened to me! To my children, Miranda and Julian, thank you for being so gracious and supportive of all my life changes and respecting my time to write this book. To my sister, Araceli Martinez; my mother, Eloisa Martinez; and my father, Fernando Martinez; thank you all for pushing me to fulfill my dream of being a writer. Debbie Miller, Wow! You were the best editor any writer could have. You guided my writing with much love and care. I really don’t know how I could have written my first book without you! You are an exceptional editor, a friend, but most importantly, an amazing human being. Zenaida Fechez, thank you for being my guide, my mentor, and the connector of beautiful things. Olga Rocha, my biggest champion, I love that you were always enthusiastic about my book and could not wait for it to come out! Tarra Flores Sloan, my soul sister, thank you for pushing me to write this book. You are an amazing woman.

    Introduction

There may come a day when you decide to silence the outer world and listen to your inner world. When you do, you will discover a voice. It’s your true voice—the voice of your spirit. For many years, it has waited in silence, watching you make life decisions based on fear and on the beliefs of others. But it can’t remain silent any longer!

The spirit voice starts as a whisper. It starts to question your life, your existence. It reminds you of your life’s purpose. It informs you that you have conformed to a life that was expected of you. It tells you that it’s time to awaken from your slumber. It’s time to realize that all the material possessions that your parents, society, and the world told you would bring you joy did not. Then you recognize a void: the lack of significance and purpose in your life. You may feel perplexed because you have a beautiful family and home. You are financially stable with a successful career. You are content but not happy, satisfied but not fulfilled. You are living, but you don’t feel alive. You are at a crossroads.

Your journey will not be easy. First you must decide between two distinct roads. One is the most-traveled road. It is the road you know, the road you find comfortable. The other is the less-traveled road. It is the unknown. It’s scary because you have never been on that road before. You may not know anybody who has. When you start looking at the pros and cons of the less-traveled road and the life-altering changes it will require of you, another voice emerges. This is the voice of the ego. The ego voice tries to convince you that you need to conform to the life you have now. It tells you that change is scary; that you are too old to change your life; that you are not smart enough to be an entrepreneur; that your childhood dream was just that—a dream. This voice says that you must be realistic and that you have a 401(k) plan and a family depending on you. The ego voice says that you will fail.

As you contemplate taking the less-traveled path, you will hear the spirit voice tell you, Do it! It’s time to live the life of your dreams. You won’t fail. You are smart enough to be successful at anything you attempt. Take a leap of faith. Trust me. I will guide you. I know your destiny, and it’s grand!

Your spirit voice has been hoping and waiting for you to remember your purpose. You are here to make a positive contribution to the world with your special gifts and talents that were only given to you. You may have forgotten the pact that you made with your soul before you were born because obligations got in the way. It’s also easier to follow the current than to go against it. You conformed and played it safe because that was the path of least resistance. But it’s time to listen to your spirit voice. It’s time to change certainty for uncertainty so that you may discover your true destiny.

It will not be easy to follow your dreams and live a life of purpose and significance. Sometimes it will be painful and disappointing. But the bumps and stumbles on your journey will be lessons learned that will eventually result in success. This book will show you how to listen to your spirit voice so that you can believe in yourself. It will show you how to change what you know and embrace the unknown. You will have many doubts along the way. Your ego voice will remind you of your failures, but your spirit voice will remind you of your strengths. Believe the spirit voice and silence the ego voice as you change. You will love who you become. This is my story of how I learned to believe, change, and become my true self.

"N ancy, when you grow up, find a job that

has air conditioning, in a store or an office," my mother would tell me as we pushed ourselves to harvest tomatoes in 105º heat in Vernalis, California.

I was eleven years old, and those words followed me for the next twenty years.

I needed to make money for my LA Gear shoes and school clothes and also to help my family. Working in the fields in the summer is part of the migrant farmworker culture. As my father would remind me, his father brought him from Mexico to the United States when he was fourteen to work in the fields in Woodland, California.

My mother grew up very poor in a small town in the state of Michoacán, Mexico. She was the youngest of nine, and in those days, a woman’s ticket out of poverty was
