Rattler
There aren’t many shops left on the High Street any more. Most of them have closed down. All there is now are charity shops and bookies.
But there is still one shop left. It’s a pet shop.
The shop is run by old Mr Nash. No one knows how old he is but they say he lived through the war. His beard is snow white and he wears wellington boots even when it’s not raining.
I sometimes hang around outside the shop. I started doing it a couple of years ago when I was still at school.
It’s mostly kids that go in there. They buy rabbits and mice and stuff.

‘Hey,’ he said. ‘You are always hanging around out here.’
I thought he was going to tell me to get lost, but then he said, ‘Why don’t you come in and take a closer look?’
I went in and we got talking about the snake. After a while he asked, ‘What’s your name?’
‘Liam,’ I told
