    CHAPTER 1: NEWS AS POLITICAL AND IDEOLOGICAL ACTIVISM

    In this chapter, Mark R. Levin begins by throwing challenging questions about the whole idea of the press and its freedom, and more importantly, what it stands for. He further points out how these questions, rarely ever subjects of public contention, have left the free press’s actions unchecked, and even when brought to light, are usually met by vigorous opposition from the press.

    A thorough examination of the press, carried out in 1942, by the Commission on the Freedom of the Press, identified three challenges with the press at the time: the development of the press as an instrument of mass communication denied some set of people access to the press in expressing their opinions or concerns, service delivery in the press industry was not efficient, and finally, the persons responsible for the press have been found to engage in malpractices and fear of such persons later taking full control of the actions of the press was seen as an imminent danger to the freedom of the press.

    Then, the commission informed of the autonomy of power assigned to the press in the name of Freedom of the Press, and made it a point of note to assert the reasons why the press needed to stick to the founding principles of the freedom of the press, if that freedom is to remain uncompromised.
