    G host! Monster! SumPoo hollered with a hollow voice dripping with fear and terror.

    A huge tapestry depicting an ancient Chinese dragon collapsed towards him, assuming the shape of some hideous monster as it dropped.

    Earlier

    Detective Judge Dee , or Dee, as known to his friends and working associates, pondered the huge warehouse of ancient objects of mythological and historical interest.

    This section was strictly for Chinese artifacts.

    The air was musty, but clear of dust.

    The shadows were deep.

    There were lights, but high up and low wattage, so, mostly they created pockets of deep shadows, with narrow reveals of the contents of the myriad shelves of stored items.

    The smell of sandalwood, rosewood and aged bamboo and dried ink and watercolors mixed in the air with the rotting odor of dead rats who were buried somewhere in the numerous treasures, where they had finally succumbed to starvation.

    A faint smell of urine also tainted the air. No doubt left by rats not yet lost in the depths of the vast chamber.

    SumPoo shivered alongside him. Not from the dry, chill of the basement storage, but for another more intimate reason. SumPoo had a great fear of the dark. He claimed he saw things. Dee was never able to discover what, but SumPoo swore upon Kwan Yin’s name he was not imagining it. So, Dee tolerated SumPoo’s fantasies, knowing full well that if they were real that Kwan Yin would protect him. Was protecting him.

    It’s big! SumPoo whispered, as if by doing so, he could diminish his concern that monsters might be hidden in the murky depths of the underground chamber.

    The sound of his and SumPoo’s footsteps
