Let's Learn Piano - Noam Bonnand
PIANO LESSON 1
KEYBOARD PRESENTATION
TWO 8’S RULE
A piano almost always has 88 keys.
White keys and black keys grouped by 2 and 3.
TWO 7’S RULE
You have on a piano 7 notes (C-D-E-F-G-A-B) that are repeated 7 times on the keyboard.
The distance between two C is called an octave. (take a good look at the image, at the very bottom left of the keyboard, on sequence 1).
LOW NOTES/ HIGH NOTES
- Notes get lower and lower as you go left.
- Notes get higher and higher as you go to the right.
we will see Low notes/ High notes in a little more detail with the practical exercise 1
MIDDLE C
Middle C is in the middle. It is more important than the other C’s
because it divides the keyboard into two main parts: Left/Right.
- Left part: bass clef / left hand.
- Right part: Treble clef / right hand.
HOW TO EASILY FIND THE C’s ?
Black keys are grouped by 2 and 3.
If you look black keys, you can easily find each C.
C is the white key that is located just to left of 2 black keys.
You can recognize the middle C in this picture, which is lighter than the others.
PLAY ALL C’S ON KEYBOARD
(practical exercise 1)
Sit in front of your piano without looking at the pictures from the book.
Plays all C’s on the keyboard, from the lowest C to the highest C.
How many C's do you see on your keyboard?
(I'm talking about C's you can find with two black keys).
if you look closely at the whole keyboard, there is a C that you can't find using two black keys group, because they're not there. Do you see what C is that's different from the others?
Come on, I'll help you a little ! You will find this C a little special, at the very top right of the keyboard.
You can find this C by counting to 8 or by ascending two white keys to the right of the 3 black keys group.
You can also have fun playing all D’s on the keyboard.
(D is 2nd key of scale to the right of C).
You can also play all the E’s and so on…
(E, the 3rd key going up the scale from the C)
BASS CLEF / LEFT HAND & TREBLE CLEF / RIGHT HAND
This year we will study just part of the keyboard (4 octaves). If you look closely at the picture below, you can see that these 4 octaves correspond to octave 2 and 3 in left hand part, then 4 and 5 in right hand part. Look also at this on page 8.
- Notes to left of middle C are played (most often) with left hand, and read in bass clef on the score.
- Notes to the right of middle C are played (most often) with right hand, and read in treble clef on the score.
FINGERINGS (THE FINGERS NUMBERS)
The fingers numbers is called the Fingerings
.
These are the numbers above notes on the score.
They are used to know which finger you have to play on a note.
HANDS IN OPPOSITION
- When you play 1-2-3-4-5 with your right hand, you ascending.
- When you play 1-2-3-4-5 with your left hand, you descending.
You see, they are the same fingers, but they go in the opposite direction.
LOW NOTES / HIGHT NOTES
(Practical Exercise 2)
- Have fun playing all notes on the keyboard with any finger.
- Begins in the lower left bass and goes up to the highest note on the top right.
- You can ascending with white keys only or both: white keys + black keys.
- You can also play several notes by pressing the damper pedal (right pedal).
- Listen carefully to the sound of each note, the feeling in your ear between low and high notes.
- Imagine that there is a real string that vibrates behind each note.
- Try to feel if low notes vibrate more slowly or faster than high notes?
ASCENDING AND DESCENDING ON THE KEYBOARD
Imagine piano keyboard like a stairs. This stairs in music is called scale
An important piano rule that will never change:
- To the right, you ascend.
- To the left you descend.
FIRST FIVE RIGHT HAND NOTES & LEFT HAND
(practical exercise 3 with keyboard)
FIRST 5 RIGHT HAND NOTES
Ascending and descending the scale on the first 5 right hand notes
- Ascending: (middle) C - D - E -F- G with fingerings 1-2-3-4-5 .
- Descending: G-F-E-D-C (middle) with fingerings 5-4-3-2-1 .
