2.1 Ledger Lines
The lines on the staff are not sufficient for writing notes for all of the pitches that we may need. However, it is possible to extend the set of five lines and we can do this with help of ledger lines.
A ledger line is a small line above or below the staff that is just large enough to write one note on it. The distance between ledger lines is the same as the distance between the lines on the staff. The above staff is now extended on the top up to the high 'C' and at the bottom down to the 'G' below middle C.
We can also use ledger lines when we use the bass clef. Then we can write notes lower than the low 'G'
