Preface

Growing up as a young musician, I worked very hard and practiced every day to be proficient on the piano. I was always dreaming that someday I would be good enough to be called a professional musician and make a career of it. As I matured as a player and my ear got better and better, people started to take notice and call me in to play on sessions. It didn't take long for me to figure out all musicians are not producers and all producers are not musicians. The one thing good musicians and good producers have in common is they are very creative individuals. Usually when I get called in to do a session the producer is not looking for the best musician in the world, they are looking for someone to translate what they hear or feel in their head into sound. The producer may not be able to explain it in technical musical terms but they know it when they hear it. The other thing I noticed about producers is they will bang their heads up against a wall for days before they call in a musician to complete an idea that's not fully developed. This book is designed to give producers and musicians the musical foundation needed to play chords, melodies, develop ideas and read enough music to communicate in musical terms to other people you may be collaborating with.
