Irregular Time Signatures

Time signatures are used to identify the rhythmic structure of a piece of music, and consist of a pair of numbers, one written above the other after the key signature at the beginning of a score. The lower number represents the note value that each bar of music should be divided into while counting the rhythm, also known as the ‘beat unit.’ Meanwhile, the upper number lets us know how many of the beats — those that have just been defined — we can expect to find in each bar.

To get technical for a minute, the term irregular doesn’t just automatically refer to any time signature that isn’t 4/4. Lacking the space
