Author

Colin M Williams

Colin Williams is an Australian Award-winning keynote and after-dinner speaker, filmmaker, comedian, and author. His extensive career in the various forms of communication has granted him access to a plethora of stage do's and don'ts, and a deep insight into how to thoroughly and passionately engage with audiences. By sharing his tips on how to succeed in front of an audience he hopes that fewer people will have to learn the hard way as he did and walk a slightly less humiliating path to success. Of course, the downside to skipping the hard way is missing the brilliant stories of failure along the way!

    Foreword

Speakers everywhere, this book is for you!

I was thrilled when I heard Colin Williams was planning to share his many lessons learned from years on stage as a public speaker in a book. Having shared a stage with Colin on a number of occasions, and sat in the audience of events he’s been headlining, I knew it would be a book rich with wisdom and riddled with tips and ideas that weren’t just realistic but adaptable and 100% attainable by anyone prepared to put in the practice.

I share a learning philosophy with Colin; do the work, reap the reward. The reward in this case is unparalleled prowess at communication. Imagine, your message spread far and wide, received, heard, and acted upon. There are plenty of self-help books out there claiming to hold the secrets to becoming a better, stronger, louder speaker before you can even say the word "speaker". The faster they claim you can become proficient, the faster you should place it back on the shelf. Colin makes no claim that his account will transform you overnight. On the contrary, he attests straight up that the tips herein are based on his success, and you only take what works for you. As a speaker myself for over fifteen years the only suggestions from peers that have stuck, are those that felt natural and right to me.

Throughout this book Colin generously shares anecdotes, and recalls many positive learning experiences from Toastmasters International® (TMI), a global public speaking organisation that provides thousands of people around the world a forum to practice speaking. TMI’s primary goal since its establishment in the 1920’s by Ralph Smedley, is to provide individuals with means to improve themselves in business and life. The ability to communicate with confidence and clarity in group situations has been and will continue to be a benchmark for determining success in the western world.

TMI is only one of many communication development organisations. No one organisation is necessarily better than another. When choosing an organisation key considerations include cost, time and accessibility, but most importantly support and camaraderie. Do you feel comfortable? Will you be supported? Do you think you will come back? If yes, then that is the right place for you.

Very few are born with a natural and exceptional oratory talent. The rest of us have to learn it, and constantly work at it. You may be surprised at just how hard some of the greatest speakers you know have worked to fool you into thinking their ability was natural.

I admire Colin’s courage to share his ideas and his experiences. He’s honest and makes no qualms that not all his advice will be a perfect fit for all readers. Understanding why certain methods work or don’t work is always a benefit. Besides, how will you know if you don’t give it a go! Don’t worry if it doesn’t work. Use that experience to build on the next. When something does work, practice it again and again. Each time push yourself just a little further. Aim for that stage with the message you have burning inside you, and don’t stop learning.

Now is your time. Take this book, read it, try it, be great. Be that brilliant speaker Colin knows you
