RELATIONSHIPS RELY ON COMMUNICATION
Communication is the key to life.
The more present you are, the better your communication will be.
COMMUNICATION WITH OURSELVES
We have to start here.
You can't communicate with others unless you actually know yourself first.
-Journal
-Ask questions
-Get curious and open
-Be coached
-Spend time with yourself
-Explore your hobbies
-Talk to yourself
You've got to figure out your own wants and needs - and you do that through inner communication; learning to listen to your inner voice and your inner wiring.
COMMUNICATION MISTAKES
Mistakes We Often Make:
We assume people know what we are thinking
We assume we know what people want.
Not truly listening
Interrupting the speaker
Letting your emotions dictate your responses
Failing to account for cultural differences
Judging someone's poor communication skills
Personalizing poorly delivered communication
Avoiding communication
Not having an open mind
Speaking more than you listen
Not asking enough questions - not being interested
Looking beyond the speaker
Hoping something is forgotten
Avoiding conflict or difficult conversations
Not knowing how to speak up about your own wants or needs
Having negative or apathetic body language
Not paraphrasing or restating
Trying to be "right""
Perspective to Consider:
Communication is an artform
There's always room for improvement
Separate how you've always done this (1.0) and think about the type of person you want to become (2.0) who does this.
Ask for direct feedback
Marriage Communication:
How have I loved you well this month?
How can I love you better or more intentionally to your needs next month?
What am I doing well as a mom?
What do you think I can do better?
