Lean Six Sigma - Daniel Stevens
Chapter 1 What is Six Sigma and What You Should Know About It
This decade's most popular buzzword is digital transformation.
New technology and tools are assisting firms large and small in their transformation journeys as they vie for a larger share of the market in a fast-paced competitive climate. Is it, however, sufficient to smooth a company's transformational process? Is it possible to solve a production bottleneck or debug a service design problem with a stand-alone technological implementation? Although digital transformation accelerates a company's growth, it must be accompanied with quality control and business transformation management strategies.
In 1986, Motorola, an American business, established a new idea of quality management process in response to changing markets and procedures. It has been evolved and polished over time into a solid system of concepts and methodologies aiming at corporate transformation via a well-defined process. This is a Six Sigma final product. In addition,

What is Six Sigma, and how does it work?
Six Sigma is a group of management tools and procedures aimed at lowering the possibility of errors in the workplace. It is a data-driven approach to defect elimination that employs a statistical methodology.
The Greek sign sigma
or ,
a statistical word for quantifying process variation from the process mean or aim, is used in the etymology. The term Six Sigma
derives from the statistical bell curve, where one Sigma represents a single standard deviation from the mean. The fault rate is rated as very low
if the process has six Sigmas, three above and three below the mean.
The normal distribution graph below highlights the Six Sigma model's statistical assumptions. The wider the range of values encountered, the bigger the standard deviation. Six Sigma processes are those in which the mean is less than six standard deviations from the nearest specification limit.
Six Sigma's 5 Core Principles
Six Sigma has a straightforward goal: to offer near-perfect goods and services for company transformation and maximum customer happiness (CX).
A two-pronged method is used to attain objectives:
The foundations of Six Sigma are five important principles:
1. Concentrate on the customer
This is predicated on the widely held concept that customer is king.
The primary objective is to provide the most value to the consumer. To do so, a company must first understand its consumers, their wants, and what motivates them to buy or stay loyal. This necessitates developing a quality standard based on what the consumer or market needs.
2. Identify Your Problem by Measuring the Value Stream
To identify waste regions, map the processes in a particular process. Gather information to identify the precise issue that needs to be addressed or modified. Establish specific data collecting goals, such as specifying the data to be gathered, the rationale for the data collection, the expected insights, guaranteeing measurement accuracy, and building a consistent data collecting method. Determine if the data assists in achieving the objectives and whether the data needs to be modified or new information obtained. Determine the issue. Ask questions to get to the bottom of the problem.
3. Get Rid of the Garbage
Once the problem has been recognized, alter the process to remove variation and consequently problems. Remove any steps in the process that do not bring value to the consumer. If the value stream fails to identify the source of the problem, techniques are employed to find outliers and issue regions. To achieve quality control and efficiency, streamline activities. Finally, by removing the aforementioned garbage, bottlenecks in the process are eliminated.
4. Keep the Ball in Motion
All parties should be included. Adopt a systematic approach for problem-solving in which your team contributes and collaborates on their various areas of expertise.
Because Six Sigma procedures may significantly influence a business, the team must be well-versed in the ideas and methodology employed. To limit the risk of project or re-design failures and guarantee that the process runs smoothly, specialist training and knowledge are necessary.
5. Ensure a Responsive and Flexible Ecosystem
Business transformation and change are at the heart of Six Sigma. When a flawed or inefficient process is eliminated, it necessitates a shift in work practices and employee attitudes. A strong culture of flexibility and openness to changes in processes may help guarantee that projects are completed quickly and efficiently. Departments and people involved should be able to adapt to change quickly and seamlessly, thus processes should be built to assist this. Finally, a competitive advantage may be gained by a firm that keeps an eye on the data, evaluates the bottom line on a regular basis, and adapts its operations as needed.
The Six Sigma Approach
DMAIC and DMADV are the two basic Six Sigma methods. Each has its own set of methods for company transformation that should be followed.
DMADV is a component of the Design for Six Sigma (DFSS) process used to design or re-design various product production and service delivery processes. D – Define, M – Measure, A – Analyze, D – Design, V – Validate are the five steps of DMADV. When existing processes fail to fulfil client requirements, even after optimization, or when new techniques must be developed, DMADV is used. Six Sigma Green Belts and Six Sigma Black Belts carry out the process, which Six Sigma Master Black Belts oversee. The belts will be discussed later.
Professionals looking to grasp these approaches and application situations should enroll in an online certificate program taught by industry specialists, as the two approaches are applied in various corporate situations.
The Business Transformation Process Using Six Sigma
Nonetheless, what is The DMAIC approach is the primary approach used by Six Sigma practitioners to detect deviations and fix problems. Six Sigma is a data-driven management method for improving and optimizing company operations. To summarize, the fundamental structure is based on a strong customer focus and the effective use of data and analytics.
The DMAIC method's Six Sigma Process contains five phases:
There are multiple steps in each of the phases mentioned above of business transformation:
1. IDENTIFY
A customer-centric strategy is the starting point for the Six Sigma process.
Step 1: The customer's perspective is used to define the business challenge.
Step 2: Make a list of your objectives. What are your objectives? What resources will you employ to attain your objectives?
Step 3: Create a flowchart of the procedure. Verify that you're on the correct track with the stakeholders.
2. MEASUREMENT
The project's metrics and the methods used to measure them are the emphasis of the second phase. What can you do to improve? How do you put a number on it?
Step 1: Quantify your issue with statistics or supporting facts.
Step 2: Establish a performance metric. Limits for Y
should be set.
Step 3: Assess the measuring system that will be employed. Is it capable of assisting you in achieving your goal?
3. EXAMINATION
The third step examines the process in order to identify the variables that influence it.
Step 1: Evaluate your process to see if it is efficient and successful. Is the procedure assisting you in achieving your
