IMPORTANCE OF CERTIFICATION
Certificates and Certifications, the names for these credentials sound confusingly similar. But there are important differences. Here’s what you need to know about these resume-enhancing options and how they might advance your career.
WHAT IS A CERTIFICATE?
Earning a certificate is about education. Certificates are academic credentials awarded by colleges, universities, or other educational institutions. Students in certificate programs learn new knowledge in a specific subject or discipline and earn a certificate by successfully completing the coursework. An ideal student for a certificate program is someone who is willing to go through the experience of growing their own skillset, being real about what they want to learn, and working with others,
says Jennifer Diamond, an instructor for the UW Certificate in Project Management. Many certificate programs have few, if any, admission requirements, making them an excellent option if you want to move forward in your career. The programs are usually noncredit and take less time to complete than a degree. Certificates are commonly listed on resumes as education, and some meet education requirements for first-time or renewed certifications.
WHAT IS A CERTIFICATION?
When you have the professional knowledge you need, a certification allows you to prove it. Certifications indicate mastery of skills or standards. Professional certifications are granted by industry groups or career-related organizations. These groups assess your qualifications, usually through an exam or application process. Many certifications include the privilege to use a related designation following your professional title. Certification differs from a license, which permits you to work in a certain profession and is usually issued by a government or regulatory agency.
BENEFITS OF CERTIFICATION
Certification helps in learning new technologies, skills, and abilities for a specific promotion. Earning a new certification or an advanced certification in a particular area of expertise can help in advancing your career.
Professional certification shows consumers and potential employers that you are committed to your profession and are well-trained. It gives them confidence in your abilities and knowledge. Certification makes you more valuable to employers, so you can expect to earn more than someone without certification.
Certifications can give you the chance to learn needed skills, and be a quick way to show employers you have those skills. On the other hand, certifications can require studying or coursework, and cost up to several hundred dollars to take.
Quality Assurance Managers play a crucial role in business by ensuring that products meet certain thresholds of acceptability. They plan, direct or coordinate quality assurance programs and formulate quality control policies. They also work to improve an organization's efficiency and profitability by reducing waste. If you are conscientious, inquisitive and committed to excellence, you may find it gratifying to work in this quality compliance occupation.
Oversee Process
One of the challenges you would face as a quality assurance manager is staying abreast of internal, external and international rules and regulations pertaining to manufacturing, selling and shipping goods. Managers prepare and update quality documentation, basing their processes on a recognized standard such as ISO 9000 Quality Management, published by the International Organization for Standardization. Industry specific manuals and protocols also apply. For example, breweries follow processing specifications of the American Society of Brewing Chemists to produce a quality beer. Slight deviations in calibrations of equipment or a malfunctioning pH meter can throw everything off.
Lead Teams
As a Quality Assurance Manager, you would supervise teams of inspectors who carry out the detailed assessment of products and their components at different stages of production. Managers recruit and train supervisors, and provide them with documented quality standards as guidelines for their day-to-day work. Managers also select quality inspection tools and software to support the inspection team. You would have the authority to immediately stop the production line if you see product defects or spot safety guards off a conveyor belt.
Train Employees
Your duties as a Quality Assurance Manager would also include ensuring that employees working in production are aware of quality requirements, quality assurance managers provide training in best practices. They aim to make production employees responsible for managing their own quality standards. To promote a culture of quality, managers run awareness and award programs. When companies develop new products, Quality Assurance Managers work with the product development team to establish quality standards.
Manage Inputs
Suppliers of components and materials play an important part in a company’s quality process. Quality Assurance Managers work with suppliers to help formulate quality standards for the goods. This ensures that incoming components and materials will comply with the manufacturer’s quality standards, minimizes the time and cost of inspection, and contributes to the quality of the finished product. Any deviations must be detected and immediately corrected. For example, you would need to intervene if you discover that your supplier of automotive parts has been delivering transmissions of lower quality than expected.
Analyze Data
Being successful in the role of Quality Assurance Manager would require you to have skills in quantitative measurement. Quality Assurance Managers review statistical data from the production lines to identify quality problems. They analyze the data and recommend changes to production processes or quality controls to eliminate the problem. They also analyze records of product returns to identify specific problems or trends over time. Quality assurance managers develop and monitor continuous improvement programs, aiming to reduce the number of defects and improve levels of quality. Continuous quality improvement reduces manufacturing costs and improves overall product quality.
The Quality Assurance Manager should be self-motivated, extremely organized, and have strong communication and project management aptitude. Employers typically seek candidates with a bachelor’s degree and supported with the following skills:
Quality Assurance skills: Quality Assurance Manager needs a strong understanding of QA processes
Strategic planning: the primary role of a Quality Assurance Manager is providing the best possible quality assurance plan for a project to get completed within the project quality requirements defined in the Quality Management Plan.
Teamwork:Quality Assurance Manager interacts effectively with cross-functional team members and external stakeholders at various levels of the project
Communication skills: Quality Assurance Manager needs strong verbal and written skills to provide reports to clients and stakeholders as well as articulate quality assurance plans to team members
Quality managers aim to ensure that the product or service an organization provides is fit for purpose, is consistent and meets both external and internal requirements. This includes legal compliance and customer expectations. As a quality manager, sometimes called a quality assurance manager, you'll coordinate the activities required to meet these quality standards.
Your role is concerned with monitoring and advising on the performance of the quality management system, producing data and reporting on performance, measuring against set standards. You will need to liaise with other managers and staff throughout the organization to ensure that the quality management system is functioning properly. Where appropriate, you'll advise on changes and how to implement them and provide training, tools and techniques to enable others to achieve quality standards.
Responsibilities
Quality managers work across many industries and sectors. You may work as either a generalist or specialist. You'll use a variety of measures and management systems, such as total quality management, to carry out your role.
Your responsibilities will vary depending on the sector you work in. However, as a quality manager you'll typically need to:
devise and establish a company's quality procedures, standards and specifications
review customer requirements and make sure they are met
work with purchasing staff to establish quality requirements from external suppliers
set standards for quality as well as health and safety
make sure that manufacturing or production processes meet international and national standards
look at ways to reduce waste and increase efficiency
define quality procedures in conjunction with operating staff
set up and maintain controls and documentation procedures
monitor performance by gathering relevant data and produce statistical reports
review existing policies and make suggestions for changes and improvements and how to implement them
measure performance and identify any areas of weakness, recommending and implementing improvements
assess the effectiveness of changes made
use relevant quality tools and make sure managers and other staff understand how to improve the business
make sure the company is working as effectively as possible to keep up with competitors
train and
