    Arch-Angel Inc. - Matt Deckman

    Chapter 1

Rosela leaned out on the railing on her office balcony, enjoying the slight breeze as she gazed upon the city that housed her company, Arch-Angel Inc. It was the end of the business day, but likely not ‘her’ business day, as there were so many other things to get done. She had come out, needing a breather from the paperwork, trying to decide on how long she would actually go tonight before leaving the rest for tomorrow.

Decisions, decisions, she muttered as she looked down and rubbed her left hand, the back of it having a pyramid tattoo with a single eye in it. She had gotten the tattoo because she liked it and it fit with whom she once was- an all seeing individual. But there were those in the company that didn’t approve of their CEO having tattoos or piercings or any sort of skin alterations- it was an ‘image’ thing. Her response; ‘piss off’- telling them quite a few times as she had multiple tattoos. Some were from before the company, others after. She also had five piercings, ears, nose and eyebrow.

Finally feeling clear minded, Rosela pushed off the railing and went back inside her office. It was an office fit for a CEO that commanded a multi-million-dollar company, on the threshold of being a multi-billion-dollar company. The office itself was littered with plaques, awards and certifications that she had acquired over her life-time, along with several plants and miniature trees to help keep the place feeling alive.

Just as she was about to sit down and look over the paperwork, let’s check the coffee. Luckily for her, she had her own coffee maker, sink and cabinets to hold everything. Such were the perks of being the CEO- she got her own semi-kitchen. She had to cross her sizable office to get there, passing the leisure knee high table with two sofas on the way over. Those were for guests, having lunch, taking a nap, and getting comfy for a long haul in work.

Taking the can of coffee grounds from the cabinet, she found it nearly empty, oh poo. Definitely not enough for tonight’s work-load. Scratching her head, what to do what to do…raid the other kitchen for half a can or go home?

With a groan, she went against what she wanted to do and did what she had to do. Leaving her office, she went to the elevator, pressing the ground floor button, leaning back against the wall, waiting for the doors to close.

Hold the door please! someone called, quick footsteps being heard. Rosela interrupted the elevator doors, the person sneaking in. Thank you so much! he gasped for breath, leaning against the back wall, his bag’s strap tightly in hand.

Leaving kinda late, aren’t you Henry? Rosela asked, eyeing Henry’s loosened tie.

Yeah, he sighed, but apparently not as late as you, he gave nod to the coffee can in his Boss’s hands. Another mountain of paperwork?

She nodded, finding his glasses were full of finger-prints. Not being able to tolerate it, here, hold this, she handed him the coffee can, and went to straighten his tie.

Thanks… he waited as she tightened it.

Welcome. Can’t have you going home to your fiancée, looking like a slob, can we? she smiled, and clean your glasses too. She opened her hands for the can back, accepting it when he handed it to her.

I will, thanks… the elevator dinged open as it reached the ground floor, enjoy your night, of what’s left of it after the work, he stepped out, heading for the front as she followed out to the cafeteria.

Thanks you too. Say hi to David for me! she called after before going to the cafeteria. She liked Henry, he was good at his job and was well mannered. Also dressed well- which was evident every day of the week. Sadly for her, he was gay, otherwise she would have probably tried him at one point.

She gave a small smile at the thought of that before entering the cafeteria, smiling at the staff there; Jenna and Andreya, Michael cleaning the tables. She knew everyone one’s name at the company- as she was a-part of every interview conducted. While she had two people interview the individual for skill and experience, she listened in and watched. She was the judgement of character and so far, she had been spot on.

Going behind the counter, she pulled the lid off a larger coffee container and spooned in grounds until hers was half-way full. Another late night? Jenna asked, whipping her hands.

    Yep. How goes it Jenna?

    Same old same old.

Maybe the weekend will be different. I know I can’t wait… Rosela smiled.

I got the grand kids, Jenna playfully rolled her eyes.

At least you have kids to give you grand kids. I got nothing. Not even a boy toy, Rosela shrugged.

Not even a date to get a little something something? Jenna raised a brow, stepping closer, no hot black dudes around your block yet?

Rosela raised a brow, tone quiet, who said anything about a black guy? I’d go for white too. She wiggled her brow.

It was Jenna’s turn to snort, you bad girl, you bad.

I’m just saying, the world’s not ‘black and white’ like everyone thinks it is, pun intended, she teased, tongue out.

Jenna smiled in amusement, you mind if I ask ya something?

    Shoot.

Only guys for you? Or that extend to women as well?

Rosela paused with putting the lid on the larger coffee container, you asking for someone or yourself? At most, I’m a .5 on the Kinsey scale- I’m more of a looker for that…

It was more curiosity than anything. By the way, I’m still happily married and a solid 0 on that scale, Jenna hesitated for a moment, I didn’t offend you or anything, did I?

Pft, please. You’re not going to offend me by asking that question. There is very little I’ll get offended at, Rosela shook her head. I’ve lived long enough to understand that easily offended humans are usually stupid humans…

Well anyways, you didn’t come down here to chat about all that. Off with ya and that work you got planned- the only reason why you’d need half a can of coffee.

That’d be true. Thanks for the chit chat Jenna, always a pleasure, see ya Monday! Rosela left the cafeteria, making her way back up to her office, using the stairs this time to get her blood pumping until the coffee was ready.

The moment she sat down at the table in her office, she looked at the paperwork laid out in-front of her and took a sip of coffee. Unreal that I’m here on a Friday night… she got busy.

    * * * * *

Rosela squeezed her eyes tighter shut as the sun shone brightly through her office. The heck? she groaned, blocking the sun with her hand, looking out at it. It’s morning?

Yep, someone spoke from above. You’re cute when you sleep.

Looking up at the back of the sofa, she saw Henry there. What on earth are you doing here? she blinked at him.

I have to work today. Though I was surprised to find your office unlocked- low and behold, it looks like you never went home last night.

So it’s Saturday then? Rosela sat up, looking at the table, finding the papers nice and neat. Did you do that?

    Henry shook his head, nope.

Rosela scratched her head, closing her eyes as she concentrated- looking back through her last conscious memories, finding that she folded them just before passing out, at 2 in the morning. Jesus, she sighed, leaning on the sofa, what time is it now?

8 am. You gonna head home then come back? Henry stood, arms folded.

Rosela shook her head, no, I’m going to go about my typical Saturday. I’ll see ya Monday. Though thanks for checking in on me, she smiled, grabbing her jacket before following Henry out the door, locking it behind her.

    You’re welcome, Enjoy.

Rosela walked out of the building and swung around to the parking garage, getting into her car to drive home. Since it was Saturday morning, the traffic wasn’t as horrible as she had been accustomed to for the drive home. Once home, she showered, changed into her athletic gear- running shorts and tube top for spring, only to get back into her car and drive to the local park, where she started her 5-mile jog on some of its maintained trails.

She was greeted by some of the usual patrons while there; a park ranger, other joggers and two older gentlemen that played chess. As she made her second lap, she stopped by the older gentlemen.

Care to take a gander at who’s going to win? Jeremiahh asked, smiling his toothy grin at Rosela.

Alfred. I see the game plan he’s using, she smiled at him, I’ll be back after another few laps for you two to tell me the winner, she started off again.

Alfred raised a brow, looking after Rosela, mmm mmm, she’s a fine looking woman.

And about 50 years too young for you, you dirty old bastard, Jeremiahh joked.

Still doesn’t stop me from watching that cute little ass she’s got going. Be one lucky bastard whomever gets to see it uncovered…as tight as it is…

Calm yourself before you give yourself a heart-attack from that boner you’re liable to get…

Unknown to them both, Rosela had been able to hear every word they said, smirking, throwing a tad more sway into her hips as she ran, just as she entered the small park woods for the second time. When she came up to the bridge that traversed the small creek, she took a breather, sipping water from her bottle that was strapped to her hip. Once her heart rate was down, she continued her run.

She completed her five laps quickly, with Alfred winning the chess match. It always astounded both Alfred and Jeremiahh that she was able to see and predict who was going to win. To them, it was luck. To her, it was skill, experience and a small peak. They were two old men who played chess, so taking a look-see wouldn’t hurt- it wasn’t going to affect anything for her to speak of their matches.

The moment she was finished, she headed home to shower once more then grabbed a book to get lost somewhere else other than Earth, until just past lunch. Once immediate afternoon came about, it was whatever chores needed to be done.

    * * * * *

That Monday, Rosela came into work early, almost with a spring in her step- Jenna raising a brow, smirking. Rosela gave a slight shake of her head. It didn’t take long for her day to start; emails and other messages already pouring in, along with a particular letter addressed to her and the company itself.

To Miss Rosela of ‘Arch-Angel’, From Mathias Deckermann of Future Tech Corp, New York, New York… she studied the address below it, it stating ‘FlatIron District’. She quickly looked it up, only to find that it was located in the Flatiron district.

Weird, she eyed it before opening the envelop, finding a packet of information with a large print out of what she could only assume was a photo rendering of a building that consumed the entire flatiron district. Curiosity struck her as she started searching for the building and business online while searching through the packet of information- which was one thing; a take- over. This ‘Mathias’ wanted to buy her entire company- for more than 150% of its worth.

The bastard wants to commence a hostile take-over by buying the company out- one that I’ve taken the last how many years to build? she cracked her neck as she read over the proposal with lightning speed, concentrating on trying to find where this place was…or was supposed to be.

Funny, I can’t find anything… she raised a brow before putting the image into her scanner. She was going to have Henry look into the images authenticity when he arrived- she wanted to know what sick joke it was.

Better get a move on to more important things, she sighed, continuing on with her day, which made everyone else seem slow.

It was mid-morning, Rosela with the front desk, speaking with one of the two receptionists about office and front-end supplies when Rosela took a glance over her shoulder at the front doors, eyeing a man that seemed to be looking around. Rosela kept to her train of thought with the receptionist, getting the numbers straight as the man walked up- dressed in a dark slate grey suit and tie, hands in pockets and waited patiently, almost as if he knew he had to be.

Be with you in a moment, Rosela stated, as the other receptionist was busying dealing with another person.

I’ve got all day, so please, no rush, the man smiled as he looked around the stairs, finding quite a few people busy, running around.

Rosela quickly signed a document, order it, she smiled at the receptionist before turning her attention to the man. So can I help you?

Yes actually, he responded, extending his hand, Mathias Deckermann. I believe you received a parcel from me this morning concerning a business proposition?

Rosela accepted his hand, Yes, I did. I looked it over though I’m a bit intrigued about your company’s geographical location…

    my img

    Mathias Deckermann - Business

Mathias smiled, yes, that’s usually how things start when I approach other companies. Maybe we could move this conversation to a private location to speak more of the possible details and for some background history?

My office will work well enough, right this way, Rosela led Mathias up the stairs and into her office. Once the doors were closed, coffee or anything? Rosela asked, refilling her own.

Afraid not, thank you though. I’m more a hot coco person, he smiled. She pulled down a canister of swiss miss coco. Well aren’t you prepared, he stepped over, accepting the mug that she handed him, preparing his beverage.

I am and I do enjoy the occasion cup of coco. She went over to her desk, taking the packet of information she had received earlier that morning, so your proposal is rather bold, aggressive and quite honestly, not something I’m looking to do, sitting down to review the proposal.

He followed her over to the table, most people answer that way, but after people learn how efficient and cost effective my company actually is, they jump onboard and see an eventual 25% hire rate, that is, with a typical 5% fire rate. So it evens out to 20% eventual hires.

Those are rather impressive numbers…but there must be something more to your company’s supposed success than just managing people?

"Yes, far more. My company touches many different aspects; engineering, architecture, technology, money management, recruiter employment agencies. Those are just some of the
