Chapter 1
A high pitched Beep beep beep could be heard in a dark room, it was coming from an alarm clock. A delicate looking hand out stretched from underneath sheets and pressed the snooze button.
Another day, another dollar,
a groggy voice said, whose body pushed up. The person underneath looked up and saw two piercing green lights- their reflection in the full body mirror only feet from their bed. Those bright green lights were eyes. Her eyes.
Seeing her own eyes always woke her up, as they were certainly unnatural for a human. But then again, she wasn’t a normal human, at least not anymore.
Seeing her own eyes also brought her back to reality; of how much it sucked. Time to get up and see what shit went down,
she climbed out of her queen-sized bed, threw on a loose white t and gym shorts.
As she walked out into the kitchen, she turned on the coffee maker for the wanted caffeine and plopped down onto a sofa that was a few feet from a wall-mounted monitor, which was pushing 65 inches. It was tilted just enough towards the couch so she could see every inch without issue.
Turn on the daily news, show the feed,
she said to the voice activated system. Soon, political, regional and economic news started scrolling down on the left while stocks and other market info was up on the right. As she read the headlines, she picked a few articles and looked over to her laptop, checking for any new messages or job requests.
She saw several requests; two were escort, two were private defense, one was search and rescue and the last one was a ‘mechanic’ job. Aka, assassination. There were already quotes sent for some of them.
She signed and looked at the job payouts, fuck, I need a roomie…these just aren’t covering rent anymore. Maybe a roomie who can help with these…and if they have the background, maybe they can help…?
Minimizing everything, she motioned for the ad center to open on the monitor. Yes, Heather, should I start a new message?
asked the primitive AI.
Yes. Create an ad, asking for a roommate. Give the street address, but not the apartment address. I’ll interview first. Can’t have a slacker or druggie. Needs to bring in at least $4,000 a month.
Four thousand a month. Heather shook her head at the number. Just two years ago, it was only $2000 for the entire rent, but ever since the end of World War Three, economies were tanking. The Middle East was destroyed by both Russia and the USA with nuclear warheads. Russia had nearly collapsed due to sanctions and the USA wasn’t doing any better. North Korea was completely gone; it’s limited military slaughtered by outside countries. It’s buildings were ransacked and destroyed. The only remnants of North Korea were the ruins of buildings.
The world was hell and everything was expensive. Heather’s rent had shot up to $8000 a month just after the war and she had been paying out the nose the last few months, trying to make it up in jobs. It hadn’t worked. She was digging into her savings and it was bleeding her out.
So send me the draft before sending it out.
She reviewed the ad and made a few changes, then posted it and went to get dressed.
Roommate AD; Park Avenue and 20th street apartment complex. Those interested will be subject to interview and background check. To Qualify, minimum income is $4,000 to help with rent. Utilities already covered.
As Heather stood, she skimmed over the articles she had pulled aside and read through. More diplomats were coming over to help recover the economy, stop the skirmishes and whatever else that the same stupid idiots had caused. Once she was done skimming the articles, she went to get dressed.
She came out of her bedroom, dressed in jeans, grey shirt, biker like jacket with chains and tennis shoes. She had a utilitarian persona about her with how she dressed; only simple clothes covered up by something that could conceal a weapon. She had her pistol strapped under the jacket. The biker jacket just spiked her fancy.
She made her way out of her apartment, locking the door and rode the elevator down. One wall of the elevator was a window, showing the outside. It was a tinted window from the outside, people could see out but not in. As it chimed, indicating the ground floor, she walked out of the opening doors and exited the building. She looked around at the busy street and sidewalks before heading to where an escort mission as going to take place.
Heather could smell the smog in the air; she could feel the stuffiness in her lungs. The sun shown brightly and it was irritating to her, even with the shades she had on. The light, sound and air pollution was horrible that day, worse than what the reports had indicated. The only good air was around vegetation and that was expensive to get, unless you could grow it. It took time to do so as well.
This was what life was like in 2200 something or other. She had lost count of the years anymore and had to rely on her ‘smart’ watch to specify a time. This one was a cheap knock off of the more expensive Apple Watch, but it did what she needed. Horrible weather and atmospheric conditions, traffic and people all over. Services and products were 4 times more expensive. That’s one of the reasons why she didn’t own a car; it was too much freaking money. To rent was cheaper, but she found the guidelines too strict.
Heather made her way to a storage facility before ducking into one of the many hallways inside. She walked to her unit, unlocked the mini garage like door and opened it. Inside were shelves of various military items. She quickly closed the door, being inside it now and locked it from inside and turned on the four long fluorescent lights.
She grabbed body armor, pistols, ammunition and blades, stuffing them into a duffle bag that she would be carrying like a backpack.
The last item on her get ready list was her ultra-fancy sun glasses. They weren’t the avator style that she had walked over with, but more stream line. They also had a heads up display that linked to an actual Apple Watch. Only this one was top of the line sports series so it had all the bells and whistles that she would need in case of a massive disaster.
Once it was on her wrist, it started streaming data to her glasses, Time to go to work.
She left the storage unit and went on her way to where she was to meet up with her contact for the escort mission.

The moment she stepped through the hotel doors, she was greeted by two men who were definitely of foreign decent. They quick patted her down, not waiting for consent. Afterwards, they escorted her to their boss, who was up somewhere in the building.
Once they reached the room where the man was staying, one guard knocked and waited. Once the door opened, the man and one from the room conversed. Heather’s glasses translated, in real time, what they were saying.
This is the security? It’s a woman…very well, bring her in. Is she clean?
The man who escorted her up, nodded.
As they stepped inside, Heather looked around, the glasses picking things up for her. She spotted the man who was paying for everything. He nodded to her as she took off her glasses.
So you must be Heather?
he asked as he smiled.
And you’re the man I’m to protect?
she asked. He nodded. One thing before we start,
she looked to both sides before slapping both men in the chest. They buckled in pain.
Several other men drew their weapons as she put her hands in the air, "relax fellows, I’m not here to assassinate or anything like that. These two just got a little too hands on for me when they patted me
