Wake the Dead

Guys! Dean said, before clapping his hands loudly to get everyone’s attention.

  They were in Baltimore, all five of them in his backyard, which is where he generally had these meetings. A little party with beer, barbecue, laughs. The guys would all chat, catching up from the last time they’d seen each other.

  Ray ran a motorcycle repair shop in New Jersey. He was 36, with a wife and two girls under the age of 10. He was a serious biker, with kind, warm eyes that smiled when he did, and pierced through you when he didn’t. He had an excellent work ethic, which is why he was part of this group. Always on time, always ready to work.

  He didn’t particularly get on with Jackie, a 34-year-old clean-cut lumberjack looking dude with a healthy beard and a way-too-healthy sense of humor. He was a nice weight, which was good considering he worked in construction. It was even better for this group, because when it came to heavy lifting, literally, he was the one you wanted. He had to travel all the way up from West Virginia to be here tonight.
