    Blood Moon

    Fire crackled in the dark, quiet living room.

      Walker knelt in front of the fireplace, staring at the kindling, knowing his mother Evangeline was watching him from the sofa. 

      Why was he so nervous, so frightened of what was to come?

      I know you’re scared, Evangeline said. I was too.

      Walker looked over his shoulder. His mother was so beautiful, so regal, so strong. Fright must have been in his eyes plainly, because he saw the reaction in her eyes looking into his. 

      Get up, she said, and she stood too. 

      He was a bit taller than her, handsome, much like his father Lucas was when they met. His beautiful brown skin. His tender eyes that reflected everything in his heart. She remembered Walker as a little boy running through this very living room of their cabin retreat in the bayou. A cabin that had been in the Dupre family for generations.

      I’m proud of you, she said, tenderly. Do you know that?

      Yes, Mama.

      What’s going to happen to you tonight is what’s happened in this family for centuries. Your father, his father, your sister…me. One day you will have children and they will carry on the Dupre name. The Dupre birthright.

      Evangeline patted her son on his broad shoulders and walked around him to stand in front of the fireplace.
