    Author’s Note

    As a child, I begged my mother to have sleepovers with my friends, and I pouted for hours if she turned down my requests. What was it I craved so badly? What was so freeing and exhilarating about sharing secrets, divulging crushes, and playing games like truth or dare? I may not have known the answer back then, but now looking back as a twenty-two-year-old college graduate, I believe the answer is that humans, even from a young age, want to verbalize and share stories, fears, and desires with others. As humans, we crave connection, strive for compassion, and look to make sense of the complexity of our existence. As humans, we need to express ourselves.

    For the past four years, my friends and I grappled with the complexities of being human. We tried to figure out who we are, who we hope to be, and what career path will fulfill us. I felt some of my peers repressing their emotions. They believed their journey to self-discovery was one they must take on alone. Some of my friends said exploring feelings or discussing them is unproductive or even harmful. That notion could not be further from the truth.
