    You probably have already heard of diabetes. You may have seen it in the news, social media, or other sources. You may even know co-workers, acquaintances, friends, or relatives who suffer from it. Perhaps you suffer from it yourself. You may also know that diabetes can’t be cured and that obese people are prone to developing it. While you are familiar with the disease, you may want to further expand your knowledge on this topic.

    Diabetes mellitus, simply known as diabetes, is one of the most widespread diseases in the world. More than 150 million people worldwide suffer from diabetes and this number is projected to double by 2025. Furthermore, the total deaths caused by diabetes are expected to rise by over half within the next ten years and by over 80% in countries with upper-middle income. It isn’t surprising that the World Health Organization considers diabetes as an emerging global epidemic. So now you may ask: why is diabetes so deadly?

    Diabetes is a chronic illness, also known as a metabolism disorder, wherein a person’s blood glucose level is higher than normal. Glucose is a simple sugar that is broken down from food people eat. This supplies energy for the body to execute metabolic processes like muscle development and digestion. Insulin, a hormone produced by the pancreas, enables the body to utilize glucose and regulates it in the bloodstream. It triggers a series of reactions to convert glucose into energy. Someone who is suffering from diabetes has insufficient insulin. In effect, more glucose will remain in their blood system. Unchanged glucose isn’t beneficial. Hence, the body will choose to find alternative sources of energy. It may break down fats and protein while releasing glucose through urine. This
