The Ultimate Guide To The SNES & NES Classic Editions - BlackNES Guy

    Book – I

    The Ultimate Guide To The

    SNES CLASSIC

    Introduction

Hello there, fellow gamer, Congratulations on purchasing The Ultimate Guide to the Super Nintendo Classic Edition!

I love retro classic games and grew up with treasured instruction booklets that told me so much about the stories of the worlds that we played in. I think it really adds a lot to the experience when you’re able to pick up a book and find out more about a game before you start playing it. It makes you feel more immersed and in control, which makes it much more enjoyable. Unfortunately, the Super Nintendo Classic Edition doesn’t ship with all those lovely manuals. That’s why I made this book for you!

    Contra III: The Alien Wars

    Summary

You’re in Neo City. The year is 2636. You’re the descendent of Jimbo and Sully, two Special Forces comrades with advanced weaponry. Your mission is to defeat the aliens that invaded Earth and waged war against mankind. Do whatever it takes to get into the Alien Main Base: you’ll be running and blasting enemies left and right, above and below.  There are 6 missions to play through: The Streets of Neo City, Maria Calderon Highway, Old Cyber Steel Mill, The Battle of the Blazing Sky, The Mucho Grande Badlands, and Red Falcon’s Main Base.

    History

Also known as Contra Spirits (Japan) and as Super Probotector: Alien Rebels (PAL regions), Contra III: The Alien Wars was originally titled Super Contra IV. Contra Force, a spinoff of the Contra series was meant to be the third installment. However, a delay in Contra Force’s production led to it premiering after Alien Wars, making Alien Wars the third Contra Game.

Mode 7 graphics, available on the SNES allow designers to create complex level designs and top-down level views. Players can also equip and use two weapons, one for each hand. Later ports for the Game Boy, Game Boy Advance, and Wii Virtual console would ultimately remove these features. However, the SNES Classic preserves the Mode 7 Graphics, allowing players to once again enjoy Contra III: The Alien Wars in its originally intended format.

    Alternate Modes

2 Player Mode. There are two types, A and B. Mode A means that during top-view stages, you and your battle buddy will be fighting on different screens. In Mode B, you fight on the same screen. If you find out that you don’t like the mode you chose, you can choose the other one on the CONTINUE screen.

Difficulty Levels. In easy mode, you get three chances to continue after dying. In normal and hard mode, you get five chances. There are also unique endings for all three difficulty levels, so make sure to try them all!

    Tips & Tricks

Infinite 1UPs on Stage 3. You’ll need a gun that fires rapidly, like the Machine Gun. After you climb the building, you’ll reach the mini boss The Flying Squito Nest. Stay on the left side of the screen and fire on the enemy to the right. Use rapid fire (hold the Y Button) and tape down the button or place a heavy object on top of it. You’ll be safe and be continuously getting points from destroying enemies, so you can walk away and do something else while you stock up on extra lives.

Steal one life from your partner in a two-player game. After dying in a two-player game, hold down A and B.

Extra men on Stage 4. Defeat the flying motorbike enemies at the beginning of Stage 4 (Easy or Normal mode only) by standing on the right side of the screen. Aim upwards to defeat them and earn plenty of points. This is not recommended on Hard mode.

The real ending. Beating the game on Easy or Normal mode will earn you a congratulatory message. However, it reminds you that the real ending can be found in Hard mode. During the final battle in Hard mode, Living Brain Organism Searle (now armored) will launch an additional attack. Defeat it for a congratulatory message and the title gaming champion.

Survive the spinning sand. During the boss battle with Anthell in Stage 5, double tap L or R to counteract the fast rotation in the sand (Hard mode).

    Stages

    Donkey Kong Country

    Summary

You’re on Donkey Kong Island, home of the famous ape named Donkey Kong. Donkey Kong’s at his hut with his small monkey friend named Diddy Kong. Diddy Kong wants to become a hero just like Donkey Kong, so Donkey Kong tasks Diddy with guarding the banana hoard.

The Kremlings, led by King K. Rool, comes to steal the bananas. They overwhelm Diddy to take the bananas, and they take him too! Donkey Kong’s mission is to get his bananas and friend back!

There are fun animals you can ride in certain levels, like Rambi the Rhino, Winky the Frog, Enguarde the Swordfish, and Expresso the Ostrich. You can’t ride Squawks the Parrot, but he’ll be very helpful to you in a cave level.

    History

Donkey Kong Country earned notoriety for its use of 3D models converted into 2D sprites, giving the player a sense of 3D graphics. This earned it much acclaim from critic and players, with overwhelmingly positive reviews. Some critics credit Donkey Kong Country with extending the SNES Console’s relevance as new systems emerged onto the market. More than 9 million copies have been sold worldwide, ranking it as the third best-selling SNES game.

Tim and Chris Stamper, founders of the gaming company Rare, originally developed the technology to create the graphics. After a visit to the Rare studios, Nintendo acquired 49% of Rare and gave the Stampers permission to create Donkey Kong Country.

    Tips & Tricks

Off to a Good Start. In the first level, you can get up to 99 lives to give yourself a

good start. There’s a hut behind you to the left. You’ll need to climb up the rocks to enter it. Collect the red balloon inside for 1 extra life. Exit the level by pressing START + SELECT. Repeat as many times as you want.

Secret Levels. There are tons of secret levels in this game. Pay special attention to the areas where you can get extra lives. Here’s a tip: check out Barrel Cannon Canyon. Right where you think you should be jumping into the first barrel, take a leap of faith instead and see what happens if you steer yourself left on the way down!

Extra-long jumps. You can get extra distance in your jumps. Instead of just jumping, press Y Button to do your special move (e.g. cartwheel or roll) and jump at the end of this move.

Mine Cart Madness Shortcut. Instead of jumping into the barrel that fires DK to the mine cart, jump over it. Travel left, towards the wall. This will shoot DK across most of the area.

Infinite Lives. Begin a new game and finish the first level. Return to the first level and lose all of the lives. When Kranky Kong appears, press Down, Y, Down, Down, Y to enter a bonus area. Hold Start and Select to exit the bonus area with unlimited lives.

Warp through levels. Several levels have warp barrels hidden near the beginning of the level. Many require items, such as tires, to reach the warp barrels. Some of the warp barrels may be outside the bounds of the screen.
