    Introduction

There Has to Be Something Better

You may be scanning these first few lines of this book as a struggling mother looking for wisdom to make it through the hard times. There is a knowing in your heart that there must be something better than the life you live with a loved one caught up the chains of addiction. Where do you turn for wisdom and guidance when life is out of control? I have been there, and I must admit, true wisdom comes only from God. My experiences have afforded me some wisdom, but without God’s intervention, I would still be ignorant of the facts.

I seriously doubt that you picked up this book to see if my walk with God failed or succeeded. The facts of your life right now may be that your child is pushing God away, and you need another option to reach them. I searched for all types of ways to reach my child. I was desperate for anything that would get me out of the nightmare. Our entire family knew there was something better, but finding it proved to be difficult. It was staring us in the face, but we were too blind to see it. We stumbled in the darkness for years until we fell into the arms of Jesus. That something better is out there and waiting for you to take hold of His hand. His name is Jesus, and He saved my family. Keep reading and give God a chance as I did.

    Chapter 1

    My Story,

    Your Story

My story is very similar to yours, the names are different, but the pain and struggle are the same. The years of confusion and nights without sleep linger into oblivion. The hopelessness and helplessness hang on your shoulders like a shawl of iron. Your days are crushed under the weight of fear and anxiety. Does this sound like the world you are living in? It is time to take a deep breath and believe that change is possible for you.

As the parent of a child with an addiction, a lot of time is spent beating yourself up and feeling condemned by those around you. You hide in your home and detach yourself from the outside world. As time passes, addiction causes everyone in the family unit to become sick. Sickness must be healed. The perfect Father, God, had two children that were drawn astray by the deceptive lies of the enemy. If it happened in the garden of Eden, it can certainly happen in our homes.

I could go into a long bible story here, but this book is about healing from the effects of addiction. All we need to know is what scripture tells us, The thief’s purpose is to steal and kill and destroy… (John 10:10 NLT). This means everything you have, particularly your family. He uses your flaws against you, as well as your strengths. Nothing is off-limits to him. If it trips you up, he’s all for it.

Now I know the enemy would love to take credit for all the bad things that happen in our life. Unfortunately for him, we can do some messed up things all on our own. That little voice in our head, you know the one. I say mine has pigtails, one higher on the head than the other, and wears red lipstick placed around the lips in a big crazy circle. Yet, I have allowed this voice to tell me things, and talk me into things that were ridiculous.

I totally lost myself trying to control and manipulate a situation that I had no control over. And through this manipulation, I quite possibly prolonged the situation. It’s called selling your soul to the devil to save a sick
