This book is dedicated to Betty Forbes and Carole Harris Barton. Several years ago, we ate lunch together at a restaurant. Carole is an author and she encouraged me to find my voice and write my story. When I went home I got a notebook and started to write. Betty encouraged me to persevere as she typed up the handwritten notes which I completed. She demonstrated her appreciation of my writing in poignant ways and sent my manuscript to Trilogy. Because of her help my story can be told.

    CHAPTER 1

    THE EARLY YEARS

If my father and mother leave me, the Lord will take me in.

    Psalm 27:10 (NCV)

As the cold wind slipped through the cracks of the small shack house, the group of family members inside pulled closer to the fireplace trying to absorb some of the warmth from it. As they looked at each other, they were wondering why they were in this strange place so far away from their home in Taylorsville, Mississippi.

The young father got up and headed outside to gather some wood for the fire. As he looked around, he was shocked by the scenery. Having arrived late the night before, he had not had an opportunity to see the bleak landscape. Rows of black rutted cotton stretched as far as the eye could see. A snowfall had covered everything with a thin blanket of white. His mind went back to the family he had left behind. His family was quite wealthy when he was growing up. They were there to provide money when he ran low, which was most of the time. Now he felt alone and worried about the future.

He noticed his hands shaking as he picked up some wood from the pile near the shack. Quickly he placed the wood down and felt in his jacket pocket for his bottle. As he drank it down, his courage began to return. Putting the bottle back in its place of concealment, he quickly picked up the wood. As he returned to his family in the tiny house, he was smiling.

He told his little family that he would be talking to the Superintendent of the farm around noon and everything would be fine. His young wife felt her heart skip a beat. Her beauty was evident behind the tired eyes. She had heard this kind of statement so often during their short marriage. As her intoxicated husband added wood to the fire, she rummaged through the cans of food they had brought. With four small children and a baby to feed there was no time for regrets.

No one noticed as six-year-old Patsy slipped out the open door and headed into the snowy cotton fields. Her tiny bare feet slipped deep in the soft slushy snow and made walking hard. She had no intention of returning to the house. In the far distance she could make out the dark shadow of trees. As she got closer, she saw the barren branches waving against the overcast sky. She stood looking up in
