My husband of nearly thirty years wakes me at 6 am to ask if we can talk before he leaves for work. At first I think I am dreaming.
I rise from a sleep-deprived trance and drag myself downstairs to his office and my familiar perch opposite his desk. The windows are still shut against an unusually cool May morning. He sits across from me and with tears in his eyes, tells me he is concerned about our relationship.
By this time, lawyers have been interviewed, a settlement has been drafted and we are fully engaged in the heart-wrenching process of becoming no-longer-a-couple.
I am not so muddled that I miss the irony of this scene and, in fact, how infrequent these discussions have been. I cannot help but wonder if all the difficulty we now face could have been avoided had either of us been able to have these discussions over the
