3 Great Kings - Katheryn Maddox Haddad
1 ~ King Saul
The number of great - grandchildren of Abraham continued to grow. It had now been 1000 years since Abraham had lived. His great-grandchildren had spent 400 years as slaves in Egypt. His next set of great-grandchildren had been ruled by judges 400 years.
Now the Israel-ites (named after Abraham’s grandson, Jacob whose name was changed to Israel) wanted a king like all other kingdoms.
God warned them they would have to pay the king money called taxes to pay for a palace, fancy clothes, an army and lots of other things. They still wanted a king.
God chose Saul to be their very 1st king. Saul was very tall. He was so tall, his head reached almost to the ceiling of most houses.
He was also the most handsome man anyone had ever seen. Everyone thought he would be a perfect king.
But, he was shy. Oh me, oh my. He was shy.
The very last judge of the Israel-ites was Samu-el. Before he was king, Saul went to see Samu-el for help to find his father’s lost donkeys. God had already told Samu-el that Saul was to be their first king.
Samu-el got Saul alone and made him king in secret. Back then, men were not made king with a crown. They were made king with sweet expen-sive oil dabbed on their forehead.
Then Samu-el told Saul he would receive proof from God he was to be the 1st king.
1st, Saul would meet a man who knew where his father’s donkeys were. It happened just as Samu-el said it would.
2nd, Saul would meet 3 men carrying 3 small goats, 3 loaves of bread, and a skin of wine. They would give Saul 2 loaves of bread. It happened just as Samu-el said it would.
3rd, Saul would meet some traveling prophets of God. He then would start speaking the words of God too. It happened just as Samu-el said it would.
Later, Samu-el called the Israel-ite people to gather with him so the people
