    Joseph - Katheryn Maddox Haddad

    1 ~ Joseph Is Born

Joseph’s great-grandfather was Abraham. His grandfather was Isaac. His father was Jacob.

When Joseph was born, his father had been in the land of Haran for 20 years.  It was time to return to the land God had promised to Abraham, Isaac and his father, the land where Jacob had been born.

After the family got back to his father’s homeland, God changed his father’s name from Jacob to Isra-el.  So now, Jacob had 2 names, but he wanted everyone to call him by his new name.  Jacob’s grandmother’s name was Sara which means princess.  Jacob was named Isra-el which means Prince of God.

Later on, when Joseph was old enough to under-stand his father’s new name, he was proud that he was the son of a prince.

Finally, Joseph’s father with the new name—Isra-el—settled down. And guess who he settled near?  Joseph’s grandfather, Isaac.

Joseph always enjoyed visiting with Grandfather Isaac.  His grandfather was blind, but Joseph didn’t care. The old man was happy.  Joseph thought it was funny that Grandfather Isaac’s name meant laughter because he did laugh a lot.

Joseph’s mother was Rachel. She was very beautiful.  When Joseph was 12 years old she gave him a little brother who his father named Ben-ja-min. Ben-ja-min was born near a city named Beth-le-hem.

Joseph now had lots of brothers—11 in all.  They were all older than him except Ben-ja-min. Everyone used to call Joseph the baby of the family. But he wasn’t the baby of the family anymore. Ben-ja-min was.

Joseph enjoyed playing with Ben-ja-min, though he wished Ben-ja-min would grow more so they could play catch ball together.

Isra-el, Joseph’s father, often said Joseph was a lot like their great-great-grandfather, Noah.  Abraham had known Noah personally, and a lot of people didn’t like him because he was always trying to obey God.

Oh, yes.  Young Joseph was like Noah all right. He always tried to obey his father, even when his older brothers did not want to. So, his older brothers
