THE BOY WITH MANY NAMES

Rolihlahla translates as ‘pulling a branch’ – but it also means ‘troublemaker’ in Xhosa, the language of his people!

Rolihlahla’s family was from the Thembu tribe, which dwelled between the high Drakensberg mountains and the Indian Ocean in southern Africa.

Rolihlahla’s father was a chief named Gadla, and he was a wise and dignified man with a tuft of white hair on the top of his head. Little Rolihlahla wanted to be just like his father, so he used ash to make a white tuft on top of his head, too!
