    Book Overview

    Chris Kyle grew up competing on horseback in rodeos and working on a ranch. By the time he went to college, Kyle longed to be on the ranch again, or even better, join the military. He visited a recruiting office and was immediately hooked on the idea of trying to get into the Navy. After an initial rejection based on an old rodeo injury, he was recruited into the Navy.

    Kyle trained not only for the Navy, but also to become a Navy SEAL. He learned to conquer his fears as well as find physical and mental fortitude as he was pushed by various trainers and leaders. He was also hazed by his peers throughout the training and initiation process. In addition to his exhausting training and preparation for life in the Navy, Kyle met and fell in love with his wife, Taya, who supported his passion for serving his country, at least at first.

    Kyle served in the Middle East where his primary duties almost always involved covering Marines, soldiers, or other SEALs as a sniper. Through his experiences tracking and killing insurgents, Kyle was able to hone his skills as a sniper and share his knowledge with those around him.  He was awarded several medals and attained a record for the most and longest kills of any sniper throughout military history. He survived many firefights and several close calls. Two fellow SEALs, however, were not so lucky. One, Ryan, was blinded after being shot. The other, Marc Lee, was killed while trying to protect others in his platoon.

    Between deployments, Kyle and Taya had two babies and grew apart due to the stress of their lifestyle. Kyle’s passion for eliminating the evil terrorists and insurgents in the Middle East did not waver, even as his wife grew impatient with his priorities. It was not until he felt he had come a little too close to death that Kyle questioned his desire to continue as a SEAL.
