Introduction
––––––––
Mental Health has always been an important issue that has and is unnoticed and unappreciated by much of society.
People have been suffering in silence, and even today, many do not talk to their loved ones about their mental anguish, leaving their illness untreated.
Others do not even comprehend that behind their coping mechanisms
(drinking, smoking, watching porn, etc.) and their harsh self-criticism lie dormant many traumatic experiences or existential dilemmas that, with time, will continue to affect their core-self.
Most people are still far from understanding themselves and the reasons behind their actions or feelings, such as anger, anguish, stress, insecurity, shyness, amongst others.
Many grow completely unaware that these feelings can sprout from unresolved attachment issues, fear of abandonment, humiliation, devaluation of their personal worth, insufficient attention, etc.
This social issue stayed in the shadows of unprecedented tragedies, which have included wars, terrorism attacks, hunger, and poverty, hanging low on people's minds until they were ready to face their demons somehow.
It stayed buried behind a persistent need for survival and the rough times they had to survive.
It has surfaced in recent years as awareness grew, as people started to look for help and started thinking about their own happiness.
Thus, Mental Health Awareness has become more relevant in the past decade.
And it is much more common of an issue than you believe, as recent studies have shown that 1 in 5 people experience Mental Health issues during their lifetime at least once.
And unfortunately, it is expected that these statistics will further increase...
In itself, the human mind remains a field of unprecedented mystery that many scientists have yet to grasp fully.
Unlike social stigma and perception, Mental Health is a term that embodies someone's emotional, psychological, professional, and social well-being, which can severely be altered by all kinds of circumstances in the course of life.
It results in serious impediments to their functioning in most daily constructs and activities, however mundane they might seem to you or others.
Mental illnesses can occur at any stage of life. Anyone can be affected regardless of social standards such as gender, age, living conditions, location, income, social status, ethnicity, religion, sexual orientation, background, or other aspects of cultural identity.
Although it is true, it has been shown that the percentage of people whose orientation or identity qualify them as part of a minorities groups (be it for the color of their skin, their sexual orientation, their beliefs, or other criteria that others may see as a deficit) have clearly shown more symptoms more often because of social disproval and discrimination.
It is also known that lesbian, gay, and bisexual adults are twice as likely to experience a mental illness due to their social acceptance or the accumulated stress related to their differences and four times more likely to attempt suicide than straight youth.
And that is mostly because of the pressure that society exerts on them through the prism of what is normal and accepted.
Not identifying yourself in this mold or not being part of it can have serious mental repercussions.
You can see it as self-destruction for one since they keep being compared and compare themselves to their peers in appearance, personality, style, or academic standards, which might hugely devalue their self-worth.
They might also become so desperate to fit in that they lie to themselves and their loved ones, getting married and having children just for the sake of appearing 'normal' to others norms and going to such lengths to realize later in life that their happiness comes first.
That they shouldn't feel bothered by others' opinions or mindsets.
That instead, they should have found their own voice.
Mental Health embraces everything about your core-self: from your feelings, beliefs, stress, and actions to how you think, behave, deal with and relate to others.
Many factors can contribute to poor Mental Health, being life experiences (trauma, abuse, loss, bullying, social shame), family conditions, or biological heritage.
As such, it can take many forms and many shapes. Many types of recognized mental illnesses are, to some extent, also known to the general public, like anxiety, bipolar disorder, depression, eating problems, OCD, PTSD, and Schizophrenia, amongst many others.
From mild disorders (only affecting everyday life slightly) to severe mental health conditions (which may suggest that the person be admitted to a hospital for medical care), both remain in the scope of Mental Disorders 6that - every year in America - a total of 25% of adults and 13% of children could be diagnosed and faced with.
Having poor Mental Health literally feels like going to battle every day, fighting and struggling to keep undertaking all the tasks and obligations expected of you.
It means to face a world in which you don't feel appreciated, hoping to fit in with a bit of effort.
Sadly and tragically, some people end up giving in against their extreme emotional pain and suffering.
They wish to put an end to the pain and to be freed finally. They wish for the pain to go away, so they can feel calm, reassured, happy, or in peace.
This is why they tend to sleep a lot, engage in recreational activities to distract themselves before they resort to much more drastic practices as self-harm or even attempting suicide...
