    Welcome to the Mage Academy

It is dark inside your egg. Very, very dark.

Oh, when you opened this book, did you think you were going to be a student at the Mage Academy? No, you’ve got an even more important job. You’re going to be a mage’s familiar. What’s that, you ask? There are three things that make a mage. The first is magical ability. Every student accepted to the Mage Academy has that. The second is training. That’s why a mage goes to the Mage Academy, to learn to use their powers. The third is a dragonlet familiar. That’s you. Because mages are so powerful, they need the help of familiars.

A familiar helps a mage control their powers and helps them be the best mage they can be. You sit on the mage’s shoulder and give them advice, helping them through difficult times. It’s not easy to be a kid, but a kid who is also a mage can cause a lot of problems!

So right now, you’re not able to see the Mage Academy with its tall stone walls and towers and robed mages running around, preparing for the new students. You aren’t pushing your way through the crowded streets of the town below with all of your worldly belongings in a trunk that you help load onto a great cart to be taken up the hill to the Academy.

You don’t see the great, blue sky above or the warm sun shining down—though you can feel that through your shell. You can’t see the great courtyard where you and the other familiars are, still in your eggs. You can’t see these things, but you know they are there. For the past several weeks, older mages have carried you around, teaching you where everything is in the Academy. You’ve been in the room during their classes, learning about mages through your shell. You’ve been kept warm with fire spells, but today there is no fire spell necessary. The sun is warm enough, and you are about to hatch.

You hear, rather than see, the students arrive, their voices quiet and awed by their magnificent surroundings.

Mages can be born anywhere, so they come from all kinds of families, from rich ones with palaces to poor ones living in huts. Every year the Crown sends out the Queen’s Mages to conduct mage trials, and the children entering the courtyard now are the ones who have passed those trials. Each one has the power to become a great mage, but they will need a lot of help to get there.

Welcome students! Grand Mage Dmitri calls out. Everyone, come gather around. Here in these eggs are your familiars. You will each be chosen by a familiar.

Yes, you will choose which mage student you want to help.

First, gather around the eggs. Be gentle, but you can touch the shells. You can talk to the dragonlets inside. They are almost ready to hatch. Each one will hatch when they’ve found the right mage. You’re each going to talk to the eggs, and you must whisper. You will lean in close to the shell, like this, and you will whisper your name, and where you want to go first now that you’re at the Academy. Traditionally the dragonlets are hatched in one of two places: in the main square of the market, or in the great atrium of the library. Where would you like to take your egg?

These are two places you’ve never been before.

You hear the small feet shuffle forward, towards you, and the voices start to whisper. Four stand out to you.

My name is Mikkel, says a boy’s voice. I would like to go down to the market in the city. Where I’m from is a small village, so I’ve never seen a large market.

My name is Reyna, says a girl’s voice. I would also like to go down to the market. I am from this city, and the market is my very favorite place. There is always so much going on.

My name is Anya, says another girl’s voice. I don’t like loud and busy places. I prefer somewhere quiet. I would like to go to the library here in the Academy. It is the largest in the world, and I think that would be something to see.

My name is Joel, says another boy’s voice. I would like to go to the library because it is quiet and I like peace and quiet. It’s easier for me to think if there’s not a lot of noise.

Other voices whisper to you, but those four are the ones you remember the most.

First sorting! Grand Mage Dmitri calls out. The students who want to go to the market will stand on my right. The students who want to go to the library will stand on my left. I will call out market and then library, and the dragonlets who want to go to each of those places will wiggle. You’ll be able to see the shells rocking when they do.

Ready to wiggle? Where do you want to go?

    To the Market Square

    To the Library Atrium

You’ve just helped another mage find their dragonlet, and now you’re hopping into another egg and becoming a different dragonlet. This time you wiggle when Grand Mage Dmitri suggests going to the Library Atrium.

    The Library Atrium

People must be quiet in the library wing, so you are carried there in silence. Each new mage has picked up an egg, so you are being carried in someone’s arms, feeling the soft sway of their gait. The silence outside is very soothing; you could get used to spending a lot of time in the library wing.

After a short while, you feel yourself set down on warm sand. You’ve been told about the hatching grounds in the Library Atrium, which are a square patch of sand kept warm by some fire magic. The warmth absorbs into you, making you relaxed and comfortable. Soon, you’ll be ready to hatch.

You can’t hear what Grand Mage Dmitri says, because he must whisper quietly, but you hear the footsteps of the young mages head your direction and then feel someone put a hand against your shell. The young mages start to whisper to you.

I like the library because crowds make me nervous.

I’ve never seen so many books before.

    Everyone here is so serious.

Some of the books and scrolls are so beautiful with the fancy lettering.

I hope there’s a map. I think I could get lost pretty easily.

The ceiling overhead is all stained glass and shows the four elements. It’s beautiful.

The mages over there look very serious and like they are studying hard. But over here, they are smiling and lounging on pillows. I think they are reading books that are more fun.

I really would like to clear my head, says a familiar voice. It’s Joel. I like how quiet it is here, and it would be nice to sit and meditate for a while. I have so many feelings swirling around inside me. It would be nice to sit somewhere quiet and let them settle. Or perhaps it would be nice to find a novel and get lost in the story. I’d read it aloud to you, very quietly, of course.

Then you hear Anya. I’ve never seen this many books before. I could sit here and read for hours. There must be more spells on any one shelf than a person can learn in a lifetime, but I definitely want to learn as many as I can.

All right, says Grand Mage Dmitri in a quiet voice. Everyone gather around. The hatching is about to begin. The new mages will each put their hand against an egg and whisper their name. The dragonlet will choose you by hatching. If the dragonlet doesn’t hatch, move on to another egg.

It’s time to be born into the world. Which mage do you choose?

    Anya

    Joel

It’s Joel’s turn to be chosen by a dragonlet. If you remember, Joel wanted to have some quiet time, and then maybe read you a novel. Now that you’ve hopped into another egg and become another dragonlet, you can hatch when Joel puts his hand against your shell!

    You Are a Water Dragonlet

When Joel puts his hand to your shell and whispers his name, you poke through the shell with
