To concerned parents and nervous grandparents

The Scary Dragon Chronicles are hand written for children 8 to 80 years

Children are brave and fearless and resilient, and can cope with battles and struggles with horrible creatures. And, children of all ages have much faith in fantasy. I know, I was one!

There are no rude words or naughty bits, but lots of wars and swooning maidens, even a wedding thrown in.

I hope you are young and enjoy these twelve stories too

Critics Opinions (children are the harshest critics)

Millie Stoney Age 12 – In my opinion it a great story as I loved the sense of adventure and mystery it really made me want to keep on reading to find out what was going to happen next. It was funny when Alby down and crashed although I do feel sorry for him. My favourite characters are the hedgehogs because they are brave and caring. This is an awesome story.

Renee Age 14 – Your ability to take the reader to the place and time you've created within the cover of a book is simply excellent!

Izzy Shield Age 13 – To brian thank you very much for your wonderful story I love it so much You are an amazing writer.

Jack Age 10 – Cool story. Meeting the Dragons has been great.

    R. Brown North Shore Critic – I chuckled my way through these lovely stories and enjoyed the escapades these quirky characters got up to. They are stories that will appeal to any age group. It was great to read about real Dragons, living in a real garden. I look forward to meeting them again in the next book.

    Another famous quotation.

Thank you for sending me a copy of your book; I’ll waste no time in reading it – Moses Hadas

    Notes on the Author

    The Scary Dragon Chronicles

Hidden in a lush fern garden overlooking the ocean, can be found a very special rock wall, and indented with a number of caves and fissures. Blue flowers cascade prettily down the wall face, orange butterflies swoop through the air and everywhere there is a feeling of warm and friendly magic.

May I have the pleasure of introducing them to you?

    Thank you

First, meet Millie, a very cute but slightly feisty Dragon, who was the first to take up residence. She lives in her own cave next to a real Hobbit House. She is timid as can be, but people can’t help liking her. In her nervousness she could accidentally burn your hand off, so do treat her with the respect a lady like her deserves. She has a propensity (fondness) for laying magic eggs, some of which create more baby Dragons, some just impart great magic to anyone lucky enough to be given one of her eggs.

This is Loretta, a warrior guardian Dragon, protector of all who are dear to him/her. (None of us is sure whether he/she is a boy or a girl, but it doesn’t matter, though we think she is a girl Dragon). She is ferociously independent and protective of her friends. Now she CAN be a bit scary. She is slightly younger than the others, but reads adventure and war stories incessantly, and dreams of doing heroic things.

Bixley Burlington Baxter is a rotund bookkeeper, seriously fond of embroidery and good food. He adores Millie. He is a perpetual worrier, especially over things like his accounts, his bulging belly and even about getting hit by a falling albatross, but he actually is a very courageous little Dragon. He is strong and very good at maths and does all his adding up in his head. Girls tend to giggle when they hear his name so he prefers just Baxter, or Bax.

Wilheim of the Belch-much Clan, arrived recently to take up with Millie again after a nearly 400 year absence. He was briefly delayed by getting involved with a rock and roll band, but you are about to learn that story. Millie has a desperate urge to be married to Wilheim. He is a fun guy, probably a Scorpio Dragon, somewhat irresponsible but totally dependable when the going gets tough.

There’s a fabled young Green Dragon and even Imoogi, a mystical eastern Dragon, who travelled half way around the world to live here.

Marley is a delinquent lad, too good looking by far, he has yet to find his meaning in life. He does have a great sense of humour and is adopted by the others.

Albie is the big bird who lives up on the deck of the house, constantly fearful of the cat trying to steal his fish. Over the years, more Dragons keep hearing about the magic place with the fern garden overlooking the ocean. So many Dragons managed to find their way here, that the BigFeet people had to build them a special Dragon Wall.

The BigFeet are of course the people who live in the Big House, the castle up above the wall. I hope that someday you might get to visit these garrulous, cheerful, happy go lucky Dragons.

Now, let’s get on with a story.

    Dragon Book One

    Millie’s Cave

The night is dark and stormy, grumbled Millie, through the heavy wooden door.

Don’t be silly, said the baby hedgehog outside, probably her closest friend. It is bright sunshine out here and there are no BigFeet around. Open the door and come out.

It took much persuasion, for Millie really was rather timid. She rustled her wings, trying to look impressively threatening and blew a little smoke from each nostril. She counted her batch of magic eggs twice, but finally she did manage to push the big doors open. On doing so, a shaft of pure golden sun burst in and flooded the cave. The magic eggs shone and sparkled in sheer ecstasy, with cascades of light cannoning off the earth walls of the cave. Millie squinted delicately and went outside.

Oh no, said Millie, that gross gardener is still here.

You mean Ben? said the small hedgehog, looking at the straw scarecrow, who was leaning casually against the old tree, gazing upwards at nothing in particular. Oh, Ben is OK, he is studying astronomy. See how he is looking upwards at the stars. He is very clever you know.

He EATS SNAILS! exploded Millie, and a hiss of steam shot out her nostril.

    Madame! C’est escargot, retorted Ben.

C’est bluddy snails, you creep. If I was bigger I would incinerate you.

But you are not and won’t be for five hundred years, by which time I shall be Chief Gardener on the Moon, came back Ben, placidly.

No wonder I live in a cave, you pimply moron. Don’t come near me, I am going for a walk.

At that very moment, the sky darkened and there was an ominous beating sound from above. They all turned and looked upwards.

Oh no, mind yourselves everyone, called Millie, here comes Albie. Look out, look out!!!

Everyone in the area scampered. The tiny hedgehogs, the little lizards, all ducked for cover. To Albie, the black-backed gull who thought he was an albatross (but he really was just a black-backed gull) the path in front of the Hobbit House was a relatively wide and flat landing pad, a cinch to any black-backed gull, really. Except Albie.

Sure, he could fly OK and his take offs were good, but his landings were woeful. He had failed landing class twenty-two times, once taking out the tutor, once missing the landing pad completely and doing a header into a lake. One classmate suffered a heart attack he laughed so much. Albie was totally mortified; landing, like singing, was an art that completely passed him by. Only necessity made him ever move from his comfy perch on the decking, where he was constantly admired by the BigFeet.

However, this was one of those times, for something of VERY GREAT importance had happened, and the gossip just had to be shared. Albie crash- landed through a bunch of swan plants, scattering dozens of seed pods and a few monarch butterflies into the air. Using his wings in wide flat reverse, he stalled his flight, and came to rest. Unfortunately he was still one metre above the pathway.

With a whoomp he landed very heavily on his belly, which knocked the wind out of him. The hedgehogs both rushed up on their tiny feet and tried to support him, but black-backed gulls are VERY big, compared to tiny hedgehogs, so they gave up and went round to his beak end.

"Are you alright, Mr Albie?’ asked One Hedgehog carefully. Gulls do have big beaks and squawk a lot and always seem to be fighting, especially over food.

    Mph Mptmph ppt.

Pardon, sir? said Two Hedgehog politely.

Mphmph mppphht. The hedgehog looked thoughtful.

You know, sir, I do believe if you took the fish out of your mouth we would understand you a little better. The cat isn’t here you know.

    Albie staggered up,
