    Introduction

Hi there, I’m David and this is my dragon, Moonlight. I believe in dragons with my whole heart. Do you believe in dragons? Because you have to truly believe before you can see them.

If you believe in dragons then you can come along on the adventures with the Dragon Flyers team. What? You have never heard of The Dragon Flyers? Well, around here, they are famous! It’s kind of a secret club. I’m not sure exactly what they do, but I hope to find out soon. I want more than anything to become a Dragon Flyer, but it’s not easy to get on the team.

My best friend Joe and his dragon, Dart, are Dragon Flyers. He’s teaching me what I need to know to be part of the team. But before I can become an official member, I have to be invited and then pass all the tests.

Here comes Joe now, I can’t wait to find out what he has for me today.

    Well, you coming?

    1

    Dragon Secrets

Has Moonlight talked to you yet? asked Joe.

    Dragons can talk? I exclaimed.

Shhhhh, it’s a secret! Joe quieted me with a finger to his lips.

I lowered my voice and asked, So, Dart really talks to you?

    Yeah, sometimes.

    What does he say?

I can’t tell you. What my dragon says is only for me to know.

Do you think Moonlight can talk?

Of course, all dragons can talk, if they want to.

How do I get him to talk to me?

Joe rolled his eyes and said, It’s not up to you, silly; it’s up to your dragon.

Do you think he will talk to me when I become a Dragon Flyer?

You have more to learn before you can become a Dragon Flyer, but I think you’re almost ready. Here, take this book, and do exactly as it says.

Joe handed me a brown, leather bound book that was well worn. It had a thin leather string that wrapped around the cover to tie it shut. The title on the front was embossed and read, The Dragon Book of Secrets.

I ran my fingers over the raised letters and smiled. This is exactly what I needed. Thanks buddy.

I rushed home so I could start reading. I propped myself up on my bed and sunk into the pillows, ready to learn all the secrets about dragons. I turned to the Table of Contents and scanned the chapters.

    Chapter 1: Finding your dragon

Chapter 2: Making friends with your dragon

Chapter 3: Dragon names and superpowers

    Chapter 4: Riding your dragon

Chapter 5: Rules of dragon racing

    Chapter 6: Dragons can talk

Ha, I chuckled. I sure could have used this book sooner.

I quickly turned to Chapter 6. I couldn’t wait to find out how to get my dragon to talk.

I read out loud, Before starting this chapter you must complete Chapters 1-5. If you have finished all the steps in each chapter and your dragon is not talking to you, here are a few things to remember.

1). All dragons can talk, but they rarely do.

2). Your dragon will talk when he wants to.

3). Dragons will only talk to someone they love and trust.

Am I doing something wrong? Why won’t Moonlight talk to me?

    Doesn’t he love me?

I turned the page to find out more.

Are you kidding me? That’s it? The next page was the start of Chapter 7, ‘How to Become a Dragon Flyer’.

I scanned through the rest of the book, but I couldn’t find any more about getting a dragon to talk, so I put the book down in frustration. I wanted Moonlight to talk to me even more than I wanted to become a Dragon Flyer. What would it be like to have a talking dragon AND be on the Dragon Flyers team? Joe was able to do both, so it was possible. But how? I guess I was just going to have to keep learning all I could about dragons.

I found the flashlight hidden under my bed, slipped under the covers and started reading The Dragon Secrets book again. The answers must be hidden somewhere in here, and I was going to find them.

    2

    The Dragon Stone

Well, has he said anything yet? asked Joe as we headed out on our Saturday morning training flight.

To become an official member, you had to be one of the best dragon flyers, but there was a lot more to it than just racing dragons. You had to learn all the rules, know the motto and be found worthy of being a Dragon Flyer, whatever that meant.

No, he hasn’t said a word, I replied.

Just keep studying the book. And make sure you read the warning … about the Dragon Stone.

What Dragon Stone? I cried. But Joe had already whizzed off ahead of me.

What was a Dragon Stone? I wondered. As soon as Joe said that, all I could think about was the Dragon Stone.

Moonlight and I finished our training in record time; for once I didn’t try any fancy tricks or attempt to beat Joe and his speedy dragon, Dart. All I cared about was finding out what a Dragon Stone was.

I flipped through all the pages, but there was nothing about any Dragon Stone. I was about to give up, when I saw it. The message was imprinted in the back of the book on the inside of the leather cover in bold letters:

Warning! NEVER touch a Dragon Stone.

There was a paragraph below the warning written in small letters.

‘Every dragon has a colored stone, but some are well hidden and you have to look to find them. The stone is the heart of your dragon and will glow when he feels a strong bond with you. Inside the stone lies a hidden secret and you must NEVER touch it.’

Wow! That’s what is on Moonlight’s forehead. It’s his Dragon Stone.

His stone glows when I’m around, so he must like me a little. But still, he won’t talk to me. If I knew the secret inside the stone, then maybe Moonlight would talk to me. But the book says not to touch it.

Would it be ok, just to get close to it?

That night I couldn’t sleep thinking about the stone. I tossed and turned until I couldn’t stand it anymore. What if I just…look at the stone? The book said I shouldn’t touch it, but it didn’t say I couldn’t look at it.

I slipped from under my covers and crept over to Moonlight. He was resting his head on the window sill above my bed as he slept outside on a low cloud. I stood on my tippy toes to look inside the stone, but I couldn’t see anything. I leaned in closer.

It was no use; it was too dark to see anything. I thought of getting the flashlight, but I was afraid the light would wake him up.

Maybe if I touch it just a little, it will light up so I can read it. What harm could there be?

I really wanted to read the secret hidden inside, but I thought of the warning again. I lay back on my bed and let out a heavy sigh. I tried counting backwards from one thousand to distract myself. I got all the way to five hundred and twenty six before I gave up. It was no use, I couldn’t fall asleep or stop thinking about the Dragon Stone.

The secret was right there on Moonlight’s forehead. Surely it wouldn’t hurt if I touch the stone, just enough to get it to light up.

I slowly approached Moonlight, being careful not to disturb the sleeping giant. I held my breath, squeezed my eyes shut and reached out with the tip of my finger to gently touch the stone.

When I opened my eyes, Moonlight was still asleep. I waited for the stone to light up, but nothing happened, the stone was still dark inside.

Maybe there is no secret. Or, maybe, you can only see it during the day.

At least nothing bad had happened. I felt relief wash over me like a warm shower.

See, everything was fine, and nobody would ever know I touched the stone.

I decided I would try again tomorrow, when it was light outside. Moonlight usually takes a nap in the afternoon, so I might have a chance to look then.

I crawled back under my covers and fell asleep, dreaming of dragons and their hidden secrets.

    3

    Sick Dragon

When I left for school Moonlight was fine, but when I got home, my dragon didn’t look so good.

Moonlight’s head was hanging down, his bright blue scales had lost their color and were falling off. The star on his forehead was dark and glassed over.

Oh, no! I cried. What have I done?

I ran to get Joe as fast as I could. He would know what to do.

Joe’s house was only a couple of blocks away, but by the time we got back to my house, Moonlight looked even worse.

You didn’t touch his Dragon Stone, did you? Joe asked as he gasped at the sight of my sick dragon.

    No! I blurted.

Well somebody did. Your dragon has been hurt.

    What? I asked.

When someone touches a dragon’s stone, it hurts the dragon something terrible and makes them deathly sick. The stone is their heart and it’s very soft inside. A dragon guards their stone carefully and will only expose it around someone they trust, so someone he knows well must have done this.

He’s going to be OK though, right? I wailed.

    I don’t know.

I gulped hard and started to tear up.

It was me. I’m the one who touched my dragon’s stone, I admitted as I fell on my knees in front of Joe.

YOU? You did this to your own dragon?

I didn’t mean to. I was just going to get close so I could see inside. The next thing I knew, I touched it.

Oh, this is bad, real bad, Joe murmured as he shook his head.

Tell me what to do, I begged. I’ll do anything to save my dragon.

Joe grabbed me by both arms and looked me right in the eyes.

You must release your dragon from the bond of friendship.

    What?

When a dragon connects with you, they are yours for life. That’s the dragon friendship bond. It can only be broken by you.

But I don’t want to break my friendship bond!

You hurt your dragon and now he’s dying. He must return home if he is to live. But once he leaves, he can never come back.

    Nooooo …

Your dragon is still here because he loves you. He is giving up his own life instead of leaving you. If you don’t break the bond soon, your dragon will die.

    I can’t lose my dragon!

Joe hung his head low, then turned and walked away.

My dragon looked even worse and I fell down beside him, sobbing.

I’m so sorry I did this to you, Moonlight. I didn’t mean to hurt your heart, I whimpered.

A large, dragon tear slipped down Moonlight’s face and landed on my hand. I began to cry even harder.

I love you, Moonlight, I said through my sobs.

When I couldn’t cry anymore, I sat up and wiped away my tears. I knew what I had to do.

You must go now, before it’s too late, I ordered Moonlight.

    But he didn’t move.

Go! I release you, I said as I was shooing him away.

Go away Moonlight. Leave now and never come back! I ordered, my finger pointing away.

I started yelling for him to leave and desperately trying to push him away with my
