N
o one seemed to hear, so I shouted, Hey, where’s Dax?
One by one, the team stopped their chattering and looked my way.
He was right behind me. Anyone seen him?
I asked, looking around.
Panic set in, and I couldn’t breathe. Dax, where are you?
We have to go back!
I exclaimed. I think the Night Riders have him. Just before I entered the portal, I heard that awful buzzing sound.
We can’t, David,
Tina Thao said. We have to leave before they arrive. Dax is probably hiding somewhere. He’ll catch up to us.
He should have popped out right after I did,
I said, shaking my head and nudging Moonlight forward. I’m going back,
I said. My stomach was in knots. I wasn’t leaving Dax behind.
Tina moved her dragon, Tigra, in front of Moonlight, blocking our path. Tigra sneered and bared her teeth. Moonlight narrowed his eyes at the big orange dragon and snorted. We were determined to find Dax.
Let me go,
I said. My mouth was dry, and my hands shook.
We’ll find Dax, I promise. But you can’t go back. If they have him, they’ll be waiting for us, and we have no protection or power in the Land of Giants. You wouldn’t stand a chance,
Tina said as she stared through me.
I can’t leave him,
I said, urging Moonlight to push past Tigra. Why was she the boss, anyway? I stared back.
Come on, buddy,
Joe said as he and Dart moved to my side. Dax is fine. He’s probably grinning right now, watching the Night Riders search for him.
He’s in trouble. Come with me,
I said to Joe.
Dax is smart, David. He’ll get out and come find you,
Joe said.
You’re supposed to be my friend,
I said, peering at him.
David, I am your friend. But if the night riders have him, we’ll need the third power to face them.
I sighed, sank into my saddle, and patted Moonlight, feeling his strength reassured me.
Besides, how would they ever capture a drog that can disappear?
said Joe.
I gave Joe a weak smile and said, You’re right. Let’s get out of here.
The team took off with Tina and Tigra leading the way. I tried not to think about Dax. Instead, I focused on enjoying the moment of victory with my team as we flew together toward Dragon’s Bridge. We now had two of the three powers needed to defeat the Night Riders. I wondered what Joe’s power would look like and what it would mean for the Dragon Flyers. Would we all be strong or have superpowers?
We touched down on the dark red dirt. Patches of pale green sagebrush dotted the area, adding a pleasant contrast. It was home, and felt comfortable after being in the treacherous Land of Giants. I was excited to hear how Joe stole the armlets from the giants. I had been too busy luring the two ogres away from my group to be part of the rescue. Now, I wanted to hear all the juicy details.
Joe met me on the ground. Don’t worry, Dax will show up.
I wasn’t convinced, but I turned to the silver cuffs wrapped around his upper arms. He didn’t look any stronger.
How do they feel?
I asked, reaching for his arm and tightening my grip around the cuffs. Are you stronger?
Joe flexed his biceps under my grip like he was a superhero or something. He grinned and laughed. I got the power, buddy.
That made me chuckle, and I forgot about Dax for a moment.
Come on, let’s join the others, and you can hear all about my daring escapade,
Joe said as he led the way.
Calli was talking, her back to Joe and me. She re-enacted what happened, flinging her arms about, then striking a warrior pose. Joe mimicked her actions, following her moves like a shadow. The group started laughing at Joe’s antics, which told Calli that another performance was stealing the show.
She stopped and glared at Joe. Very funny,
she said.
Joe blushed and apologized. Sorry, Calli, I couldn’t resist. You were so immersed in the story.
It was pretty intense, the way it all happened,
she confessed with a smile.
It was. Did you tell them about when I…
I cut Joe off. Hey, I want to hear everything. I missed all the action, so start over at the beginning,
I insisted.
Let’s tell it together, Calli,
Joe said as he motioned for her to go first.
I sat down on a flat rock and leaned in to hear. I didn’t want to miss a single word.
Calli recalled the details and acted them out as she went.
Well, when you took off running, we jumped on our dragons. We knew the other giants would come when they heard Dax barking, so we grabbed our fasers and waited. It wasn't long before the giants showed. I had an idea where the armlets were.
Joe explained, Calli figured out the giants were wearing the armlets. But since the jewelry would be too small for their enormous arms, she guessed they would wear them as earrings.
I was right too! One of the biggest giants was wearing them as ear cuffs at the top of his ears,
Calli said as she exposed her ears with both hands to show us. But how to take them without getting ourselves killed? That was where George came in. We figured if the drixies attacked the giants, Joe might have a shot at stealing the cuffs and avoiding the acid bombs.
Joe continued, "Calli sent George to find the drixies. It didn’t take very long either because they were chasing the Night Riders, and they were close by. The Night Riders flew back toward the river, trying to escape the burning acid, and
