My Dirty Ex - Rod Polo

A Christmas Party with Daddy's Best Friend

Ava walked into the cabin and gave herself a short tour.

Well, this will do, it’s smaller than I thought but, I can try and make it work. It’s the holidays so anything and everything should work, right? Ava thought.

The cabin was small but, Ava wouldn’t let that spoil her Christmas spirit. She had decided to spend time alone that year so that she couldn’t feel the need to pretend to be something that she was not.

This year had tested her patience her more than she could bear. Ava was shocked that she was not in a mental asylum.

Ava placed her bags on the bed, picked up her phone and her purse, and went outside the cabin. She had come all this way for peace and self-realization; staying locked up inside was not an option for her.

She took a stroll around the neighborhood, then made her way to the nearest café and started making plans for the holidays while she was in the area.

Ava was so deep in her notes that she didn’t hear someone slide into the opposite couch.

Hey, Mooney pie, what are you scribbling?

The voice made Ava look up quickly as if someone had bought her an unexpected present.

Uncle Mason, she started with a smile, happy to see him.

She stood up to hug him, then sat back down. Uncle Mason had been a friend of the family for the longest time. He and her dad had been best friends since high school.

However, the family hadn’t seen him for a while. Even the mention of his name caused a lot of her parent’s fights.

So how have you been? she asked.

Good, just a few businesses here and there. Anything to get me away from your Aunt he grinned

Ava smiled, even though the mention of her aunt made her feel guilty and uncomfortable. She had known the two since she was young and now that they were getting a divorce, people were taking sides on who to support.

As expected, her mother took her aunt’s side while her father had his best friend’s back even though everyone knew that Mason was the one in the wrong.

She is bitter, and rightly so because you cheated. I am not taking sides, but if we are honest. Finding out that your husband is having an affair with another woman is a hard pill to swallow.

Mason leaned forward, reached for her hand and smiled at her.

Hey, it’s okay. I don’t expect you to take sides but don’t shut me out because I messed up in my marriage.

Ava felt like she backed into a corner. She and her uncle had had a lot of fun times. They may have crossed the line a couple of times, but she was sure that Mason had her best interest at heart and turning her back on him was wrong.

I don’t want to, but you and aunt have put most of us an awkward position, and I have so much love for you both.

Ava could feel Mason gently squeezing her hand, and playing with her fingers. That wasn’t new or creepy to her. Over the years, a lot of little things had occurred between the two other than hand rubbing.

How about you give me a day, and if I haven’t convinced you before it’s over, then you can take her side.

Ava took in a few deep breaths. Mason had her right where he wanted, and there was nothing she could do other than accept his offer. Unless she runs out the café without paying the bill, but that would mean that Mason would take care of it.

He always looked after her. He was that guy for her, the guy that takes care of everything; the guy who would help her pay her tuition fees if she needed it or get her employment if she needed the extra income.

Okay. You have a day to make me feel a different way about the situation. He had been there for her in a lot of tight situations the least she could do was allow him to prove himself.

Mason smiled and let go of her hand. Ava felt like the statement had created a thousand ideas and suggestions in his mind.

Agreed, so what do we do for the day? Did you have any plans?

Ava shook her head. She had just started crafting her plans, and there was no activity in the area that didn’t involve couples. She had even begun to wonder how the single people in the place felt being there.

She looked at Mason and smiled, a part of her wanted to lie and craft an
