    CHAPTER 1|ALEX

Weddings are one of the most remarkable events ever, only when you’re a guest and your relationship with the couples isn’t valid, all you have to do is sit, eat, and even dance, but only if you want to.

That wasn’t my case. I had a close relationship with the groom, Sam, my best friend since birth. Our moms were best friends since high school; they went to the same college and did everything together, except getting married to the same person, of course.

Sam and I grew up watching our moms, their friendship, the love they had for each other, and how well they tolerated each other. Until last summer, when Sam’s mom, Anita, died of leukemia. Mom was devastated, so she traveled to the place she and Anita had planned to go when either Sam or I got married.

They had their bets on Sam, and they were right. Sam and I knew we wanted something like that or even better than what they had because they had a beautiful friendship, so we did everything together. We did stuff together just like they had done.

I smiled at my best friend looking very clean and sharp in his tuxedo. Sam had always been a hottie, he had a beautiful face and a lean body, then our fathers started taking him to the gym with them when Sam was 15.

He had all the characteristics of a hot man: perfect brown hair, straight, even teeth and a bright smile, beautiful silver eyes, the ideal height, and an amazing body. Sam got a lot of attention from the female population in all the schools we attended. Still, just one girl caught his attention, Michelle Walker.

Sam claimed he saw her in a coffee shop close to the company where he works. It was more of a group than a company because they had clubs, hotels, restaurants...you get what I’m trying to say, right?

Anyway, it turns out the CEO is Michelle’s twin brother, Quinn, and she was on her way to him when they met so cute. They were in a relationship for nine months, and then Sam proposed.

It can’t get any more perfect than this, he had told me, and I smiled because it was so cute seeing a player so whipped.

I just hope you’ll find a man and stop breaking innocent hearts, Sam dared to say to me.

I’m going to let this go, only because you’re about to get married and Michelle is such a sweetheart, I told him, and he laughed at me as I adjusted his tie. I was so proud of him. He was taking a giant step in his life. I’m just grateful that I’m a part of it and I’ll always be a part of his life.

I know you said you don’t want to talk about this again, but you know, Quinn is a great guy. Why don’t you want to get with him? he asked, rubbing my naked shoulders.

This was Michelle’s fault. She said she wanted her maid of honor to break jaws and twist necks, so she chose this dress for me. It was a peach-colored dress with beautiful embroidery, sleeveless, sitting comfortably on my thighs as it clung to my curves for dear life.

It was a gorgeous dress, no kidding, but it just wasn’t for me. Seeing as I couldn’t complain about the dress to the bride because of the fear of losing my ears, I wore the dress.

You know I don’t want to talk about Quinn, so let’s drop it, I smirked at him and sat on the couch in the room Sam was preparing in.

I don’t even know. Do you and Michelle talk about this and practice what you will say to me? Because this was the same thing she was talking about last night, I told him, frustrated about the conversation.

I had only met the man once. It was during a charity thing that his company organized. Sam hadn’t met Michelle yet, so I was his date.

Let me introduce you to my boss, Sam had said and dragged me, literally, across the hall just to meet a man I didn’t give two shits about. Lord knows I was expecting an older man in his 50s or 60s. Instead, it was a real-life Adonis.

I know I said Sam was a hottie and all but, this man was in a different league. His chiseled jaw looked like it could cut through anything. He was so good-looking it was almost scary.

Quinn, this is my best friend, Alex, he said and turned to me, begging me to be kind to his boss with his eyes.

Alex, this is Quinn, my boss, he introduced and I smiled, being as polite as I could. Quinn didn’t bother to return the smile. He kept a straight face, his high cheekbones reminding me how ugly my best friend was. He kept an unbothered look on his face as he assessed me from head to toe, such a rude fuck.

Pleased to meet you finally, were the only words he said to me that night, and from the look on his face, he wasn’t pleased at all. If he had his way, I’m sure he would’ve sent security to escort me out of his building. He was so rude and unwelcoming that I told Sam I never wanted to see the man again.

According to Sam, Quinn and I had a connection that neither of us had noticed. When Michelle heard about it, she made it her mission to make Quinn and I meet and rekindle our connection.

Thankfully and very fortunately for me, all their plans never worked. Quinn and I never set eyes on each other. It’s just sad to think that all my efforts to never set sights on Quinn again will be going down to shit today because I couldn’t ditch the wedding. Both couples would kill me.

I can’t believe you judged him based on your first impression of him, Sam laughed, sitting on the couch with me. I didn’t judge him, he judged himself, I corrected. Quinn was full of himself, full of shit, and the worst part is that he has no one to tell him. Everyone kisses his ass, which is just really sad.

Look, I promise you that he’s a good person and you judged him too quickly. Just imagine you’re meeting him for the first time today and try to be nice, sir, he said, smiling at me as a father would.

The only problem is that this is not the first time, and my imagination doesn’t work, sir, I told him, and he laughed out loud.

    QUINN

Hey, fathead, what are you thinking about? Michelle, my twin sister, asked, hugging me from behind as I stared outside the balcony with my arms folded.

You know, you should be happy and keep a smile on that face of yours. If you aren’t going to do it for yourself, at least do it for me. It’s my fucking wedding day, she whined. I smiled and turned to her.

I’m only mad because you’re trying to get makeup on my shirt, I said to her, and she laughed. I was so happy for my sister. She deserved all the happiness in the world, and thankfully, Sam was offering just that.

I was a bit skeptical about him at first because, despite his excellent work, all he ever talked about was his best friend. Not a single day passed by that Sam didn’t mention his best friend’s name, Alex. It felt like he was in love with her, or worse, obsessed with her.

It was true that she was beautiful. She had a pretty face and a banging body, but that was it. There was nothing special about her. Maybe it’s because I had such high standards.

At one point, I thought Sam was trying to play Michelle. You know, get with her because she was my sister, but that wasn’t the case. He genuinely loved her, and their relationship was admirable.

Remember what we talked about, Quince, be nice, Michelle warned, and I nodded. I didn’t promise anything, but I was going to try my best for my sister.

This will be the first time since that charity event. That’s a long time, Alex laughed nervously. I don’t know Michelle and Sam’s deal with the girl. They’ve been singing this same shit since the week started.

Don’t get me wrong, I love my sister and Sam’s just like the brother I never had. I just felt like strangling them whenever they mentioned her name. It felt like Alex cursed them and turned them into puppets or something.

Whatever! It’s almost time! Let me go make sure Sam doesn’t have cold feet, I told her, and she laughed.

Stop saying shit like that to me, it’s scaring me! she cried out. I laughed at her on my way out.

When I got to the door to Sam’s room, I couldn’t help but notice that the door was slightly open. Look, I’ve never had a peeping or eavesdropping habit, but I couldn’t help myself as I looked into the room.

I said, come here! I heard a female voice say. It couldn’t be anyone else but her, Alex. I put my head more into the open space. I didn’t know why I was doing this. Was I waiting for something to happen?

I couldn’t see them per se, just their reflections in the floor-length mirror that adorned the room. Sam walked to Alex and she grabbed both sides of his face, then leaned in. What in the hell were these two thinking? What the hell was that slut doing on her best friend’s wedding day?

Let’s not even get into the fact that Michelle literally worships the ground Alex walks on. They’ve been friends for what? A year? And this is how Alex decides to pay her back? By kissing the guy Michelle is supposed to marry in a few hours?

See? This is the reason I never liked her in the first place. I always thought she was pretending to be best friends with Sam in the open and fucking him behind closed doors. She was such a tool, and I was very disappointed with Sam.

I retraced my steps back to Michelle’s room. I stood in front of the door, contemplating if I should tell her about it or not. If I did, the wedding was going to be delayed. She’d be hurt. I didn’t want to see my sister hurt, not for any reason.  I took a deep breath and decided I was going to take care of the matter later, after the wedding.

I was going to show Sam and Alex that they messed with the wrong brother. I turned around, ready to march into Sam’s room while sporting the fakest smile ever. Still, today wasn’t just my lucky day, as I found the devil’s cohort staring at me like I grew a second head. I shot her a nasty look but coated it with a smirk, and immediately Michelle opened the door like she knew Alex and I were standing outside the room.

Lexi! You have no idea how long I’ve been wait - Quinn? What are you doing here? I thought you went to see Sam, Michelle said to me, confusion etched on her face like a little girl.

OUUU!!! You look beautiful, Mami, Alex distracted Michelle, opening her arms wide as she engulfed Michelle in a hug. Was she feeling guilty about what she just did? Hypocrite.

I told you you’d look fine in that dress, Michelle complimented, and Alex smiled. The guts!

I thought you were going to give up being my maid of honor and be Sam’s best lady instead, Michelle cried, and Alex laughed. This was too much for me to watch.

Quinn, what are you still doing here? And did y’all say hi to each other? Michelle asked, and I gave Alex a brief nod, which she returned like she didn’t want to.

Just watch. I’ll make your life miserable, Alexandra.

    CHAPTER TWO | ALEX

I won’t have a reason to be in the same place as Quinn. Sam and Michelle thought they could make something spark up between Quinn and me. They didn’t know that what Quinn and I felt for each other was pure hatred.

I could tell from the number of times Quinn had killed me with his eyes in just one day. He had this disgusted look on his face like he could smell something pungent when I stood next to him during the wedding. I swear I had goosebumps. His aura was so cold and dark, it was almost sickening. It scared me. He scared me.

My best friend was officially the husband of a gorgeous lady. They were fortunate to have found each other. They had the same energy! It was the best and the scariest thing. They were mischievous and evil.

Here’s a perfect example of their personalities. Quinn and I were on the same jet as Sam and Michelle, sitting with the newlywed couple. We were flying to their honeymoon location, the Maldives. According to them, they didn’t want a honeymoon, they wanted a vacation with Quinn and me, as we’d be going back to our regular lives.

Do you guys want to play a game with us? Michelle asked, so they finally stopped eating each other’s faces and acknowledged the fact that there are others in this jet, one of
