    About the Author

    Chapter One

Heads up, love. Guess who’s coming to visit?

Surprised, I looked up from the little watercolor I was busily making a mess of. Um, the tooth fairy? Santa? No, no, wait… Bun Rab?

Easter had just come and gone, and maybe he was looking for a little R&R? Bun Rab was a favorite of mine. He didn’t get to come around often, but when he did we had a ball. And Annamae simply adored him.

Then I noticed the look of disquiet in Sam’s beautiful baby blues before he looked down again at the opened letter he was holding that had come special delivery. I saw the Massachusetts postmark on the envelope. My folks wouldn’t send a letter special delivery to announce a visit… Oh! Not the in-laws!

No! I gasped. We hadn’t seen them in ten years.

Sam kept looking at the letter. Then he nodded. I’m afraid so, Babes. He lifted his eyes to me.

Just your mom and dad, right? It would be hard enough with just them here without…

Um, no. Sorry. Myra and Steve are coming with them, Sam looked apologetic as he eyed the look on my face.

I tried to rearrange my face into something other than the dismay I knew it was showing. Sam’s parents had never accepted me into the family. Not because I’m black mind you, or because I’m a werewolf. They didn’t know about that little item or even that Sam was one too--an interesting story in itself best left for another time--but because they thought Sam had married way down. I was not a member of their elite social circle, namely, The Upper Crust.

Sheesh. I mean, just because my dad is a mechanic and my mom teaches third grade in a public school, and they don’t own a big fancy house or car doesn’t mean they’re teetering on the brink of destitution or something. In other words, my in-laws are snobs. And why were they coming anyway? And bringing Sam’s brother and his high maintenance wife?

The last time we saw them ten years ago, they were so cold to us, well, to me anyway, I felt as if I should have been wearing a snowsuit and fur lined boots for protection against those icicles falling from their lips and the frost shooting out of their eyes. Made me shiver and it was July at the time. That was just from his parents. Steve totally acted as if I didn’t exist, and Myra’s nose was so high in the air I thought she might get it clipped by an orbiting satellite.

    "Okay, okay.
