    Chapter One

    I must begin to ascertain my reason for awakening at this time, though I know I would still sleep were there not a need.

    As I cannot yet hide myself, I await the dusk to go out into the land. Then, I fly above the unlit countryside and I am saddened that the world has once again, darkened. I am not surprised at this state as such has come about before.

    The world I last awakened to had been prosperous and full of marvels. There were great cities with people able to speak with one another over long distances and go to and fro in special flying conveyances, but unthinking men had caused much damage. The destruction, though injurious, was not such that I could not soon mend it, so at that time, I made repairs and again removed myself from the affairs of humankind in the hopes that they would not bring about such upon themselves again.

    Unfortunately, I see that my hopes have not been realized.

    I examine nearby ruins I come upon, and peruse old records, and thus I discover a portion of what has occurred in the thousand years since last I went out into the world of humankind, what events have awakened me to my task.

    Strife has again brought the world to ruin. The children of man are quite clever; however, some things they learn slowly or not at all and this time, the destruction is much more extensive.
