    About Deb Logan

    Prologue

What a difference a year makes!

Last year I thought I was a perfectly normal teenage girl. I lived in Wichita, Kansas and had never even seen an ocean. I’d definitely never been near salt water.

Now I live in Hawaii with my dad and swim in the Pacific Ocean every single day. And… I know the truth.

    I’m not a human girl.

I’m a siren. A creature of the sea.

Kind of like a mermaid, but without a tail or scales or gills. When I swim in salt water, my body transforms. My hands and feet elongate and my toes and fingers become webbed. And my lung capacity goes off the charts! I don’t breathe water, I just hardly need to breathe.

Well, to be honest, I’m only half-siren.

My mom rescued my dad when his small sailing vessel went down in a storm far out to sea. She was a siren; he was a human. They fell in love, moved to Hawaii, and lived happily ever after.

    Until I came along.

Mom didn’t know whether I’d have enough siren blood to transform, but she was sure I’d be drawn to the sea, so she convinced Dad to move inland to protect me. At least until I was old enough to understand the dangers and let Mom test me, slowly and safely, to see if I could handle myself in salt water.

Unfortunately, Mom died in a car accident before she got around to testing my abilities — or telling me what I am.

Poor Dad didn’t know what to do. He was grieving for his lost love, didn’t have a clue how to explain everything, and had no way to test me. So he just kept doing what he’d always done: kept me in Wichita, as far from salt water as he could manage.

    That kind of worked. Until
