About Debbie Mumford
Chapter 1
Emily Jane Williams chewed the nail of her right index finger and stared at her computer monitor. The glowing words mocked her with their blatant invitation to experience life beyond her small Rocky Mountain town.
The chat room friend she’d been fantasizing about for the past six months wanted to meet her… in a place as far from her normal life as she could imagine. Adventure. Desire. Danger. Those words belonged in novels, not in Emily’s staid, placid life. A shiver tingled down her spine and she squirmed in her well-worn secretarial chair.
She ran trembling hands through her long brown hair and licked lips gone suddenly dry. This called for a witty remark, something that downplayed the rapid staccato of her heart. Unfortunately, her unsteady fingers moved with a life of their own.
Emily had lived her entire twenty-eight years in one place: Aspen Springs, Colorado. Her big adventure had been to spend her four years of college on the Front Range, at the University of Colorado’s Boulder campus. She’d never been out of her home state, let alone out of the country. The thought of going to Shanghai, even to meet a man as fascinating as Crusader, filled her with terror.
A frisson of delight spread through her core. Crusader always knew the right button to push. Knights and ladies, castles and dragons, these were images that made Emily's soul sing. Sometimes she felt like she’d known this mysterious man forever.
Mysterious. That was the operative word. She frowned and forced herself to think, to remember that she knew nothing about this man. Unwillingness to leave the United States aside, she had no business making plans to meet an Internet stranger. For all she knew, he could be a psychotic killer.
Or the love she’d waited for her whole life…
