About this ebook

Squeeze Me: A Novel by Carl Hiaasen: Conversation Starters

Squeeze Me, a novel by Carl Hiaasen, kicks off with the mysterious disappearance of Katherine “Kiki” Sparling Pew Fitzsimmons, a 72-year-old widowed socialite, during the annual White Ibis Ball. The ball was held for the benefit of the IBS Wellness Foundation and was attended by people she knew well. The victim, Kiki Pew, was a well-known member of the Potussies, aside from having a personal net worth of a few million dollars. She has been widowed twice like most of her friends who were also members of the Potussies. She disappeared after a bartender fixed her Tito’s martini with the required orange zest and triple olives. The incident was reported late to the police because everyone thought that she left the gala on foot in her drunken stupor and wandered off.
Squeeze Me is Hiaasen's latest book—and likely his last in Trump's era. It has received rave reviews and acclaim from both readers and critics. It has been listed as a New York Times Bestselling book and as a bestseller on Amazon. Additionally, it is an Editor's Pick for being one of the best books on the Mystery, Thriller, and Suspense category on Amazon. The book is available as an audiobook from several distributors in addition to the usual hardcover, paperback, and eBook formats.

Introducing Squeeze Me

Squeeze Me, a novel by Carl Hiaasen, kicks off with the mysterious disappearance of Katherine Kiki Sparling Pew Fitzsimmons, a 72-year-old widowed socialite. She attended the annual White Ibis Ball with her friends—members of the POTUS Pussies. The police later found the cryptic clues to her disappearance around a koi pond. The investigators naturally thought that she fell into the pond and drowned because of her drunkenness, and this is where they started their late investigation. This simple scene is the anchor that held the entire book together. The opening scene at the koi pond would branch out into a complicated story that would involve the Secret Service, the POTUS, and the First Lady among other famous personalities. However, even after the book has grown into a complicated mess of unfortunate events, it stayed entertaining and funny to the very end.

The book features a female protagonist—a standard component of mostHiaasen satirical novels. The main character—Angela Angie Armstrong—was described in the book as someone with a unique ability. The opening scenes that introduced Angie made it feel that she was the story’s superheroine complete with her own set of superpowers. She is short (around five feet in height), but she can wrangle snakes, and other animals that people more massive than her wouldn’t be able to handle. She prefers to refer to the male characters as sir instead of their first names. This unique habit makes it easy to identify her in any dialogue. Suppose someone in a dialogue refers to another character as sir then for sure that character is Angie. She wears khaki pants almost all the time. Additionally, she almost always finds herself in places where the clothes she’s wearing are out of place. An exception to this is when she prepared for the Commander’s Ball at the Casa Bellicosa.

In addition to the likable Angie, Hiaasen gave most of his characters funny and ridiculous names. It is one of the book’s central themes, which highlights character flaws and stands as a double entendre for their
