    FOREWORD

Many people grew up hearing the name God and have associated it with various ideologies. If asked, Who is God? you would receive many different answers, most of which can quite often be attributed to a person’s upbringing. You may fall into this category of people who have a belief of God based on what your parents, grandparents, or other adults taught you about Him. Some people believe that He is the Creator of all things, as written in the Bible. Others believe that He is an intelligent being that is subjective to the perception of the individual. Some have the belief that God is neither male nor female but is a state of mind. And others refuse to believe in any type of higher intelligent being who controls the universe but would instead think of themselves as gods who govern their own destinies. Regardless of what perception people have of God, there is one real way to understand who He is and why He is. That is none other than through His WORD.

In this lesson series, we are going to search the scriptures to understand who God is and why it is vital for us to know about Him and His character. We will begin by breaking down some of His various names and the significance of their meanings as we grow in the knowledge and wisdom of Who God Is. In many cultures, and even during biblical times, a name held great significance into what that person would become and who they were. There were times in the Bible when God changed a person’s name to represent the call He had on their lives, such as when He changed Jacob’s name to Israel. There is a lot to be said about a name, and the names of God speaks volumes as to who He is.

    Who is God?

    Jehovah Elohim

    Our Creator

    Jehovah Elohim

    Our Creator

Genesis, the first book of the Bible, tells the most beautiful and compelling story of creation. It outlines step-by-step what Jehovah Elohim (our Creator) did to bring this world into existence. The Bible describes what started as a blank canvas into what became God’s beautiful masterpiece. After this, we learn of His pleasure at its completion, where He rested from His work. The Bible says: By the seventh day God had finished the work he had been doing; so, on the seventh day, he rested from all his work. And God blessed the seventh day and made it holy because on it, he rested from all the work of creating that he had done (Genesis 2:2-3). God took nothing and made it into a marvelous something, for He was the Creator of an original design.

Scientists have tried over the centuries to solve what they perceive to be as the mystery of creation. They have attempted to explore the mind of the Creator by finding a scientific explanation instead of relying on faith. Their theories range from Darwin’s big bang to countless others. Nevertheless, God’s mind is so beyond what humans could imagine that even the most brilliant physicist would have a difficult time understanding the mind of God in its entirety. Science, however, will never give up trying, but we as God-fearing believers can have a better understanding of God by reading about Him in His WORD. The Bible says: For who has known the mind of the Lord that he may instruct him? (1 Corinthians 2:16).

The Bible lets us know that we were formed in the image of God. The word image, as defined by Merriam-Webster’s dictionary, is a reproduction or imitation of the form of a person or thing.¹ Therefore, we are reflective of Jehovah Elohim’s features, and even though He is Spirit and does not have flesh and blood as we do, we were created to be in the likeness of Him. Unfortunately, due to sin, no one can see God’s face and live. Yet, we can look to ourselves to have an idea of God – not in the sense of a human being that is six-feet tall, but given that we were made in His likeness, we can have, to some degree, a perceptual visualization of Him. The Bible says: …‘you cannot see my face, for no one may see me and live' (Genesis 33:20). Sin separated us from seeing God as He truly is, but this text lets us know that God is not just a blob of matter but has distinctive features such as an actual face, eyes, hands, and ears. For example, God’s eyes see everything that takes place in the world. The Bible says: For the eyes of the Lord range throughout the earth to strengthen those whose hearts are fully committed to him…. (Genesis 16:9). God has ears to hear, for He listens to the prayers of His people. The Bible says: The righteous cry out, and the Lord hears them; he delivers them from all their troubles (Psalms 34:17).

We can see from the previous texts that Jehovah Elohim has a face with eyes and ears, but what about the rest of Him? Now, some people may disagree with God having features that are relevant to us, but for one to know God, it is essential to understand even the most basic details concerning Him, such as Him having a mouth to speak words of wisdom to His children. The Bible says: For the Lord gives wisdom, and from his mouth comes knowledge and understanding (Proverbs 2:6).

Another great feature about God is that He has hands in which He does amazing things throughout the earth and in the lives of His people. God’s hands created all things and brought them into being. The Bible says: The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands (Psalm 19:1). There is nothing out of God’s reach, for His hands are able to encompass the universe that He made.

Now, where would we be if God was unable to walk among us? God has feet to walk, for He walked with Adam in the Garden of Eden and also walks with us so that His glory is made known.  The Bible says: Then the Lord said, ‘There is a place near me where you may stand on a rock. When my glory passes by, I will put you in a cleft in the rock and cover you with my hand until I have passed by. Then I will remove my hand, and you will see my back, but my face must not be seen’ (Exodus 33:21-23). God spoke this to Moses when he requested to see God’s glory. Although Moses was unable to see God’s face, he was shown compassion in being able to see God’s back, which was evidence of a most crucial aspect about God – having a heart to love.

Jehovah Elohim loves mankind, but many times, God’s heart has been broken due to the sin and rebellion committed against Him. Nevertheless, God loved His creation enough not to allow man to die in sin but have Salvation through Jesus Christ. The Bible says: Dear friends, let us love one another, for love comes from God. Everyone who loves has been born of God and knows God. Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love. This is how God showed his love among us: He sent his one and only Son into the world that we might live through him. This is love; not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins. Dear friends, since God so loved us, we also ought to love one another. No one has ever seen God; but if we love one another, God lives in us and his love is made complete in us (1 John 4:7-12). This is why we were made in the image of God – to be an example of who He is. His love is shown throughout His creation through the mighty wonders of His hand.

Before God, Jehovah Elohim, made man, He created perfect and beautiful angelic beings. These heavenly beings were the first of God’s intelligent creations. The book of Job lets us know that before the universe came into existence, God created the angels who would be the ministering spirits to its inhabitants, and the angelic host sang as He laid the earth’s foundation. The Bible says: Where were you when I laid the earth’s foundation? Tell me, if you understand. Who marked off its dimensions? Surely you know! Who stretched a measuring line across it? On what were its footings set, or who laid its cornerstone – while the morning stars sang together, and all the angels shouted for joy? (Job 38:4-7). God took great care and love to form and create His heavenly beings as He did with all His creation after them. We find evidence of this with how He designed Lucifer with a uniqueness like no other celestial being. Let’s dig a little deeper concerning the creation of the angels.

    The Creation of the Angels

And he swore by him who lives forever and ever, who created the heavens and all that is in them, the earth and all that is in it, and the sea and all that is in it, and said, There will be no more delay" (Revelation 10:6).

Before God created the earth, sun, moon, stars, and even humans, He created His angelic host. There is no way to know the exact timing that He did this in a calculation of days, weeks and/or years, unlike the six-day creation account in Genesis because the Bible does not give us this information. Nevertheless, we do know that they were the first intelligent beings to be created.

God desired to have a marvelous creation to love and appreciate Him. He wanted to be in relationship with other beings, for He could have just existed with Himself being first of the Godhead. God, however, desired much more; therefore, His work began with the creation of His angelic host. These heavenly beings were not equal to God, but He created them with wisdom, intelligence, and beauty for they would be His personal helpers to assist with the needs of mankind who had not yet been created. The Bible says: Your servant Joab did this to change the present situation. My lord has wisdom like that of an angel of God – he knows everything that happens in the land (2 Samuel 14:20). Their work would be of great importance as they served their Creator, the God of the Universe.

There was a difference between the angels and humans. The angels were created spirits. They did not have bodies as humans even though they were able to take the shape of one, but they did possess free will to choose who they wanted to serve. The Bible says: Are not all angels ministering spirits sent to serve those who will inherit salvation? (Hebrews 1:14). The angels were made with mighty power and had the pureness of God’s righteousness upon them, for sin cannot exist in the presence of God. The Bible says: "There was a violent earthquake, for an angel of the Lord came down from heaven, and going to the tomb, rolled back the stone and sat on it. His appearance was like lightning, and his clothes were white as snow. The guards were so afraid of him that they shook and became like dead men (Matthew 28:2-4).

God loved all of His creation, but He took great care into making one particular angel, and that was Lucifer. The Bible details Lucifer’s role in Heaven and His appearance more than any of the other angels. This could be for a couple of reasons. Due to his rebellion, God may have just wanted us to know the depths from which he had fallen and/or God could have been letting us know that he was a unique angel in comparison to the others. Either way, Lucifer was special in the eyes of God. The Bible says: …You were the model of perfection, full of wisdom, and perfect in beauty. You were in Eden, the garden of God; every precious stone adorned you: ruby, topaz and emerald, chrysolite, onyx and jasper, sapphire, turquoise, and beryl. Your settings and mountings were made of gold; on the day you were created, they were prepared. You were anointed as a guardian cherub, for so I ordained you. You were on the holy mount of God; you walked among the fiery stones. You were blameless in your ways from the day you were created till wickedness was found in you. Your heart became proud on account of your beauty, and you corrupted your wisdom because of your splendor. So, I threw you to the earth… (Ezekiel 28:12-17).

One can only imagine the great disappointment that God experienced when the loveliest of His creatures turned against Him. God had taken great time to uniquely craft Lucifer with extraordinary beauty, talents, and precious jewels. Nevertheless, God did not allow this act of betrayal to keep Him from creating the human race. God still wanted
