Introducing A Minute to Midnight
A Minute to Midnight is the second book in the Atlee Pine Thriller series by renowned American novelist David Baldacci. It follows the protagonist, Atlee Pine, as she spirals downward due to the unresolved mystery surrounding the abduction and likely murder of her twin sister, Mercy.
The story opens with her visit to the ADX, a federal supermax prison in Florence, Colorado. It is home to the world’s most notorious criminals, and she’s there to speak to one of them. Daniel James Thor is a sociopath, a narcissist, and a murderer whom Atlee believes is responsible for Mercy’s demise thirty years ago. The incident had left her scarred mentally, emotionally, and physically, as the suspect had brutally assaulted her and left her for dead. But James Thor is no less devilish after spending time in prison, and he plays mind games with her that only leads to more frustrations than she can handle.
A subsequent car chase with a kidnapper on her way back to Shattered Rock, Arizona, tips the balance for her. She captures the culprit and vents her anger on him, leaving him seriously injured. Her boss, Clint Dobbs, concludes that she needs to take time out from work to resolve her issues. At the back of her mind, Atlee knew that if she doesn’t use this time out
to deal with her personal crisis, it won’t be long before she loses her
