I sat in a circular booth, on a leather seat which was starting to stick to the backs of my legs. I was wedged between two men: One whom I would trust with my life, the other whom I wouldn’t trust as far as I could throw.

I was hyper aware of the bodies on either side of me. Jamie was touching me, his shoulder and thigh against mine, trying to support and protect me. And Malcolm... Malcolm was turned completely to face me, his knee grazing mine, one arm stretched out over the back of the banquette inches from my shoulders. It was a predatory posture, leaving me in no doubt that I was trapped. There was an expression of barely suppressed glee on his face; he had wanted to shock me by having me watch a woman get fucked on stage by one man after another. He wanted me to know that that could be about to happen to me, if I wanted his help.

I looked down at the table, trying to gather my thoughts. In the dim atmosphere of the underground club, the coloured lights flashed, turning the table top blue, red, green, yellow. Tacky, unsubtle lighting, like something from a school disco in the 1980s. I was momentarily distracted by the incongruity of it: Who goes to all the trouble of setting up a hidden underground club where people can deal dangerous and exotic animals, and watch sex shows at the same time, only to illuminate it with garish flashing lights? The whole thing was wildly dodgy and illegal, not to mention hideously expensive, surely: You might as well splash out a bit further and get something more high tech.
