It started during a heat wave, and London is not known for handling heat waves well. As the temperatures steadily climbed through the 30s, staff on the Underground moved from politely recommending you carry water to handing out bottles in a bid to prevent fainting. Argos suddenly did a roaring trade in electric fans, selling out within a day and scrabbling to get more stock in to meet the demand. In our office, mercifully air-conditioned, my colleagues started bringing their dogs in to stop them overheating, so that the floor became more sleeping canine than carpet and you had to pick your way across the room to carefully avoid outstretched paws.

It was about a week into this sweaty, sticky time that I awoke to a cool breeze moving down my body. I had given up on pyjamas days ago and Dan and I had abandoned the duvet, sleeping under only a sheet, trying not to touch each other and accidentally generate more heat. My eyes fluttered open, scrunching up against the glaring morning light.
